Welcome to 5th Grade!

Parent Information

Fifth Grade - Mr. Powell

I welcome your child to my classroom this year and hope that the year proves to be a positive and educationally challenging one.  This is an important year for your child and I hope you will take an active part in his/her learning.  Please feel free to contact me any time you have questions or concerns.  You can call the school at 704-639-3046 to reach me.  If class has started, I ask that you please leave a voicemail unless it is an emergency.  I can also be reached via

e-mail.  My e-mail address is powellde@rss.k12.nc.us.

TRANSITION TO FIFTH GRADE

The transition from fourth to fifth grade can be a challenging one.  The amount of subject matter that needs to be covered during the year requires us to move quickly in class.  Your child might not be able to complete all of his/her assignments in class and will have homework for the evening.  I do try to monitor the homework load and try to guard against too much homework being given for one night.  If your child is managing his/her time in class, there should not be an excessive amount of work to take home.

YOUR STUDENT TELLS YOU...

"Mr. Powell didn't give us any homework today."

Mr. Powell almost always assigns homework.  The only exceptions are when we have a big test on Friday or a holiday.  However, even though I don't assign homework on those days, students ALWAYS have something they should be doing every night for at least 1 hour.  Examples of these things are:  Reading AR books, practicing math facts with someone, practicing/studying spelling words, using the "Learning Today" website (see link below), and they can always bring home their "Accelerated Math" to work on.
