Mrs.Young(Carroll) 7th grade Language Arts
Our school will continue to use the co-teaching model which means there are two teachers in the classroom implementing the curriculum. I have an access 7th grade Language Arts class 1st block. I'm co-teaching seventh grade Language Arts with Mrs. Kalinowski 2nd & 4th blocks and Mrs. Kratzer 3rd block. We will focus on various reading and writing skills. Both teams will concentrate on different styles of wrting to prepare for the North Carolina state test.

Course Information
Welcome to language arts class! In seventh grade, language arts is compacted into one, sixty-minute period and it is divided into three sections: Vocabulary, Reading, and Writing. In writing, we will focus on constructing expository essays, writing meaningful and concise short responses. Students will be expected to use Standard English in all written work. In reading, we will continue to work on student progress in comprehension and reading skills through a variety of authors and genre. Students will be reading for both enjoyment and reading for analysis during guided and independent reading. Students will learn how successful readers think whne they read, interact with and examine text. We will explore language and literature through a variety of approaches including film, presentations, projects, written assignments, etc.
Grade Breakdown
1. Classwork- These activities include but are not limited to questions, charts, visual aids, presentations, cooperative activities, and writing projects. Vocabulary words will be given weekly, and students should study these words daily.
2. Homework- Some activities may be assigned for homework. Assignments must be completed on time. Students should also study and review information each day.
3. Assessments- These include but are not limited to quizzes and tests. All assignments will be completed in black ink or pencil.
Expectations
1. Participate!!
2. Complete all assigned activites, review, and study.
3. When returning from absences, students must inquire about missed assignments.
4. Agendas must be signed each day, and will also be signed by Mrs. Kalinowski and Mrs. Young.
Organizing Notebook
All students should organize their notebooks in a three ring binder. The notebook should be divided in the following three categories: Vocabulary, Writing, and Reading..
Warm-ups
Each class period begins with a warm up called Tales of a Four- Eyed Weirdo. The warm-up involves a grammar mini-lesson. Warm ups are turned in and are a very important part of each child's classwork/participation grade. The students are also completing daily EOG activities as a warm-up.
Grammar/Vocabulary
Throughout the year, we will study different aspects of grammar, such as parts of speech, puncuation, and sentence structure. The students will be creating a Locker poem using nouns and pronouns.
We are doing daily vocabulary activities involving Word Skills. The new vocabulary program is based on Greek and Latin roots. Students should be studying the words 15 minutes every night for homework. The seventh grade teams are tested weekly on literary or poetry terms that will be found on the EOGs. It will help students increase their scores.
Reading/Literature
Both teams will be reading short stories from the Literature book and The Interactive Reader.
When reading passages, the students will also work on reading strategies such as summarizing, connecting, prediciting, visualizing, inferring, and more.
All Language Arts students on The Corvete Team are expected to read a book of their choice(approved by Mrs.Young or Mrs. Kratzer) for 60 minutes a week. A parent signature is required each time your student reads.
Writing
Throughout the year, we will work on writing skills to help prepare students to be successful on the North Carolina State Writing Test.
Tests/Projects
Students will be assessed on a variety of tests and projects this year.
Homework
When homework is assigned, it is due the following day. Late work will be penalized.
Make-up Work
Students are required to make up assignments that are missed while absent. It is the students responsibility to inquire about missed assignments. Students are expected to write down assignments in their agenda and turn in their work.
Classroom rules
Our team rules are the four P's. They are as follows: Prompt, Prepared, Polite, and Productive.
Throughout the school year The Mustang and Corvette teams could use the following supplies:

4) Scissors
5) Anti-bacterial wipes
6) Tissues
7) Pocket folders
8) Highlighters
9) Notebook paper
It would be a huge help to teachers if you would make sure your child's notebook is staying organized. We request a parent or guardian look over the agenda and sign it everyday. Thank you for your continued support.
