7th and 8th grade football has started practice and will be playing their first game very soon! Softball and girls tennis is also getting ready to begin! Make sure you come out and support your Erwin Eagles!!
It's time!!!!
Welcome back students!! I am looking forward to a great year! Parents: Please look here every 2 weeks or so for updates throughout the school year. I will let you know what is going on, what topics we are going to be studying, etc.
Math News-
We will begin learning numeration, integers, and place value within the first 2 weeks of school. You will find that a lot of this will be review, but it is important to start the year with the building blocks to help be successful!
Science News-
We'll begin the year talking about what science is and learning about who scientists are. I think students will enjoy class the next couple weeks!
Parents: Please remind your child that, even as we finish a concept, they should not forget it. As I continue to tell the students, math is a process and everything we do will somehow connect with something we already did. Reviewing notes during homework time would be a great tool to remember what was done in class!
Accelerated Math
Some of you may have heard of a computer program called "Accelerated Math". Students will be working to complete as many objectives as possible. I will be assigning each student a number of objectives each quarter that they will need to complete by the end of each quarter. (This number of objectives will be adjusted each quarter.) When report cards go home each 10-week period, the number of student objectives that were mastered will be averaged with the number of objectives assigned to them and a grade will be factored in. Not only that, but there will be rewards for everyone that meets or exceeds their goal! As if that wasn't enough, the student with the greatest number of mastered objectives from each class will be receiving something special from me as well!! This program is a GREAT way to review concepts that have been taught already and to also reinforce what is currently being taught. Students are encouraged to work at their own pace and master as many goals as possible as the year goes on!TOPS reports, (the scored accelerated math papers), should be coming home as students finish each assignment. This is a good way for you to see what they are reviewing and mastering in this program! This is an excellent way for you to monitor and follow your child's progress. I hope this individualized program is something every one of my students will participate in and will work hard to achieve their goals!!
Other information to be aware of:
**Many students in 6th grade still do not know their multiplication facts!! Please spend some time each night (at least 10 minutes) helping them practice. Everything we do this year stems in some way from multiplication and if they are struggling with their facts, they will fall behind. Also, again, please make sure your child is reviewing notes taken each day. The more time they study their notes, the less they will have to cram before a test!!
Please feel free to contact me at school anytime you have a question or a concern! I am here to help and look forward to doing so in any way I can! The student planner is also a great way to communicate. Please check this every day for any notes that our team might have written in there. This is where students are supposed to write their homework down as well.
I will be tutoring students starting in the second quarter of the school year. Just something to think about just in case some of you are wondering. More information will come in October.
Another note: In middle school, we have a telephone system called homework hotline. Students and parents can call this to check homework assignments if absences occur, an assignment was not written down, etc. The telephone number to the hotline is in the front of your child's student planner.
Thanks in advance for your support!!
I will be working on this page on at least a bi-weekly basis. Please keep checking for new stuff! Thanks!! --Mr. Dexter
Don't be a "stooge"! Do your homework and be prepared for class!!
