For all Art Classes; Each student will be required to have the following materials.
If for any reason there is a problem acquiring any of the items on the following list, please contact me at East Rowan H.S. (704) 279-5232 ext.-247 and arrangements will be made for your child to have what they need.
a. 3 ring loose-leaf binder or folder for notes
b. Spiral bound Sketchbook with 50-100 sheets of paper in it (sizes: 8 1/2 x 11 or 9 x 12)
c. Colored Pencils
d. 5 - #2 pencils
e. 1 ultra fine black permanent marker
f. 1 Large eraser g. Ruler (18 inch metal is the best)
h. Felt tip marker set (Crayola is fine)
i. 2oz bottles of assorted acrylic paint (buy Apple barrel or something cheep. DON'T buy poster paint.)
    Apple barrel is found at Wal-mart in the craft section.
j. 1 canvas boards in any of these sizes; 8x11, 10 x 14, or 11 x 14. (Most of the following items can be found a Wal-mart, Ben Franklin, A. C. Moore's, Staples, Earls Office Supply and Michael's Arts & Crafts.)

All students are also asked to bring in 3 rolls of paper towels for this semester. We go through so many that for us to keep a constant supply of paper towels in the room we need your help with supplying them for the students. If students bring in 3 rolls then I will count them as a "100" for extra credit.

FOLK ART Ceramics Glazing :
Each student will begin glazing their ceramic work once it has been bisque fired.
Classwork : Painting
1. read chapter in painting book, answer questions and begin looking up vocabulary.
2. Painting warm up - Each student will begin by painting a tint and shade study of 3 colors of their choice. 3. Watch an Acrylic painting video and list 10 different painting techniques from the video.
Project : Silhouette Objective :
Each student will bring in a picture of a silhouette from a magazine or one that they have taken. Once they have found a picture that they like, they will begin creating an exact replica of that picture using acrylic paint.
a. The painting must be as neat as possible.
b. Colors must be blended in the background and should fade from one to the other.
c. Painting must be balanced.
d. Painting must have a subject.
e. Painting must be signed and dated in the lower right hand corner when completed.
Project : Leaf Paintings Objective :
Each student has already collected and pressed 10 leaves. Now they will each find 10 pictures of items or scenes in magazines that they would like to paint. These items can be as simple as cup and saucers, trees, animals, baskets, etc. When all 10 pictures have been collected and put into a clip file, each student will choose 4 leaves to paint on and 4 pictures to paint from.
a. Paintings will be done with acrylic paint.
b. Paintings must be neat.
c. Paintings must be balanced.
d. Paintings must be detailed.
e. Paintings must have values.
f. Paintings must be signed.
g. All leaves must be varnished.
h. 1 leaf must be matted and framed.
i. Students will cut their own mats.

All Art classes have one sketch assignment due each Friday. The students will receive the assignment on Monday and it will be due on Friday when they walk into the art room. I ask all students to practice drawing and shading their sketch assignments for at least 40 minutes each week. Some times to finish the assignment, the students may need to spent more than 40 minutes. (All sketches must have values and be in your sketch book or they will not be accepted for that weeks grade.)
If student needs help with any sketch, I am always here after school until 3:15 just about every day, and I would be more than happy to help them.
Sketch Book Assignments will be as follows:
Dec. 14 - What do you remember your favorite childhood toy being? Must have values.
Dec. 20 - What is the most expensive gift you plan to buy someone this year. Must have values.
Jan. 4 - Rose of Penguin with values.
Jan. 11 - Cubing (for Review)

ART II Project : Ceramic Night-light Objective :
Each student will be creating an original ceramic night-light.
a. The night-light will be created using the Slab, Pinch and Coiling techniques.
b. Each Night-light is required to be 5" tall or taller.
c. Bust must be freestanding.
d. Sculpture must be neat and as smooth as possible.
e. The pinch, coil and slab technique must be included somewhere in your sculpture.
f. Include as many details as possible.
g. All parts must be attached.
h. There should be no cracks in final work. For every crack, 1 point will be deducted.
i. Sign and date piece when it is leather hard.

Project :Palette Knife Paintings Objective :
Each student will be creating 12 - 15 palette knife paintings. The students will collect 15 pictures from magazines and re-create that picture using a palette knife and acrylic paint. When complete, each student will submit 10 of their best paintings to be graded.
a. Each painting must be as neat as possible.
b. Each painting must resemble the picture that it was painted from.
c. Each painting must have a variety of lines and show textures.
d. Each painting must be signed and dated.
e. Each painting must be titled on the back.
f. One of the 10 paintings will be matted.

All Art classes have one sketch assignment due each Friday. The students will receive the assignment on Monday and it will be due on Friday when they walk into the art room. Some times to finish the assignment, the students may need to spent more than 30 minutes. (All sketches must have values and be in your sketch book or they will not be accepted for that weeks grade.) If student needs help with any sketch, I am always here after school until 3:15 just about every day, and I would be more than happy to help them.
Sketch Book Assignments will be as follows:

Extra Credit Students can do extra credit. Any of the following will be counted: - Sketches with values - Find anything art related in newspapers, magazines, etc. (has to be the visual arts) - Go to an art Gallery or museum and bring back info on what they saw.
