Language Arts
This program teaches kids to read, write, and spell. The Zoo-phonics Program teaches the alphabet using a cast of Animal characters and sounds, and a body movement that directly relates to the Animal/Letter, allowing children to utilize the alphabet immediately.

HOUGHTON MIFFLIN READING-
Popcorn Words are words that keep "popping up" around us. They are high frequency words that are repeated often in books and print. These words will help us to be more fluent readers and writers. Your child will bring home words soon.
BOOK AND PRINT AWARENESS
Talk with your child about punctuation- period, question mark, exclamation mark-
-Front/Back of the book-
-The Title-
-Where to begin reading on each page-
-The correct directionality of reading-left to right-
-The difference in a word and a letter-
-The difference in an uppercase and lowercase letter-
All of these skills will be a part of the second quarter DRA assessment that I will be doing with your child if they were not proficient first quarter. The little readers that come home are a great place to begin. Also talk about "picture" reading to help with story content.
After reading discuss characters, setting, plot, and sequencing in the story. I will be doing second quarter assessments this month. Review book/print skills and all popcorn words. All sounds will be assessed as well as letter recognition for those letters we have studied in depth.
Remember to read nightly with your child. Record the books in the green reading log. Children who reach their goal of 15 books per month, will receive a Pizza Hut coupon. Check homework assignments for the week in agenda on Monday. Please keep all homework and return it in agendas on Friday.
