Congratulations to Courtney Beaver, one of our State Winners for the Young Author's Contest! We are so proud of you!
Some important things to help boost your child's memory of the book they are reading:
The sneak preview. Knowing a bit about the material in advance can help your child absorb the text. Have them study the pictures, scan chapter titles, read the inside jacket and back of the book before beginning.
The whole picture. Suggest that your child stop at a section or chapter breaks and picture what they have read. Encourage them to make drawings, charts, and diagrams. This can help them connect what they read with what they already know.
The big finish. Have your child summarize what they read by telling you about the chapter or section. When they retell the information, they are learning to focus on the most important parts. Also, saying it out loud will help them keep the information in their head.
The Rowan Public Library is a wonderful place to check out accelerated reader books for your child. It takes a matter of minutes to sign your child up for a library card and books can be checked out for two weeks. I have a link to the public library at the bottom of the page. All you have to do is click on it and then click on Kids' Space, then go to links, then AR Titles by School, Find Handord Dole and then sort by reading levels. You can find a book on your child's reading level and also check to see if the book is available. I hope you will use this wonderful resource.
