Welcome To 6th Grade Science! I can’t believe how fast this school year is going by. The vast majority of students on the Jaguar team are doing a great job; however, some of them are struggling. The biggest problem that I have observed is that some students are not doing all of the required assignments. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to figure out what I can do to help these students succeed. The first step into solving this problem is to give parents and/or guardians faster access to students’ grades and averages. At the beginning of the third nine weeks, I started using an online grade book specifically designed for teachers and parents. The online program is free to use, it is secure, and it is private. Parents and/or guardians can log in at their convenience and look at their child’s grades.
Since the beginning of the school year, it has been my goal to help students gain the necessary skills and abilities to make them successful in their educational pursuits for years to come. I still hold very high expectations for each child and will work with him or her to reach the highest levels possible. As each of you know, the educational system is changing at a very rapid pace. Students can now earn college credit through the North Carolina Community College system while attending high school. Therefore, it is important for students to learn how to take effective notes in middle school. Taking effective notes increases the likelihood that students will remember the material, even if they do not review it again. However, the more students review their notes, the better the chances are that they will remember and learn the information. The physical action of writing the words on the page and the visual experience of seeing them there will make it much more likely they will remember the material. Research has shown that 70% to 90% of the information the average person hears will be forgotten within 24 hours. Therefore, taking good notes is important. Taking good notes enhances memory, increases understanding and helps students achieve better grades.
It is very important that students keep up with their assignments. Parents and/or guardians should help their child stay organized and prepared for class daily. Students should bring their science notebook and agenda to class each day. It is the student’s responsibility to come into class quietly, get out their science materials, answer the essential question, and then wait quietly for class to start.
