Welcome to Mrs. Wineka and Mrs.Cuthbertson's Class
fall 2008
Wow--what an exciting time for your child! Koontz Elementary is roaring with new "panthers." We will be using our panther eyes, ears and brains to learn so many new things. We have been off to a great start learning each others names, places in the building and so many new rules and guidelines. They have done a fantastic job.
We have been learning the "Zoo-phonics" plan for recognizing sounds and letters of the alphabet. Ask them to demonstrate a few. Maybe you will learn it too. It would be exciting to help them sound out words as they learn to read. Let me know if youare interested in having a "zoo-phonics" session one day soon.
These are the skills I will be looking for at the end of the grading period in 8 more weeks:
Word of the week: I, see, it, at
Important for Kindergarten:
BOOK AND PRINT AWARENESS -Talk with your child about punctuation- period, question mark, exclamation mark, quotation marks - -Front/Back of the book- -The Title- -Where to begin reading on each page- -The correct directionality of reading-left to right- -The difference in a word and a letter- -The difference in an uppercase and lowercase letter-
All of these skills will be a part of the DRA assessment
that I will be doing with your child before report card
time. The little readers that come home are a great place to
begin. Also talk about "picture" reading to help with story content.
Take a "walk" with them through the story, before reading the words, and try to guess what is happening.
HOUGHTON MIFFLIN READING- We are into the first theme:Welcome to Kindergarten and Look at Us I HOPE YOU ARE ENJOYING THE homework format! CONTINUE TO look for the pages to complete each week on Fridays. It is for the coming week Monday -Thursday. Turn it in each Friday for a special reward! Good work=fun rewards!
If you need to contact me you may call between 8 and 8:30a.m. or from 3:15-3:45p.m. You may also leave a message at the front office and I will return your call. The agenda that you sign each night as you review their papers is probably the easiest way to reach me. If you have any concerns about your child being ready for the first grade-- now is the time to voice them and for us to work on a solution together!
Lunch is at 12:50 each day (this may soon change--I'll keep you updated) and a $.50 treat is available every Friday. Send the money in a baggy or envelope marked with their name, amount, what it is for, my name: WINEKA and their lunch P.I.N. #. Please come join us anytime! They love your company.
Everyday is a learning experience! So many things come up as they show and share with each other.
Keep sending a sweatshirt or sweater in their bookbag if they don't wear one to school---the building is different temperatures as you move around the school and the weather is never predictable. Please mark their name in it.
