1st Quarter Topics: (based on Standard Course of Study)
Sponge Activities: Students will begin class with some type of SPONGE activity in the form of Daily Oral Language (DOL) skills, journaling, Quick Writes, vocabulary, Word Skills, etc. These class starter will begin the first week of school. Be sure to ask your child how he or she did started their day with me!
Editing Marks: One of the first topics we will cover will be learning editing marks. We will use these editing marks during DOL, as well as while peer editing others writing. Ask your child to show you ways to correct mistakes found in writing.
Dictionary/Thesaurus Unit: Everyone should know how to use reference books. By the time we are done, all Waverunners will be comfortable with using both the dictionary and a thesaurus. We will be comparing different dictionaries and learning the parts of it as well. Our class will also become familiar with how to use a thesaurus to find "sparkle" words to improve our writing.
Computer Competency Practice: All 8th grade students will take a computer competency test this year. This competency test has to be passed in order to receive a diploma. We will devote some of our class time to practice our skills in using word processing and desktop publisher. We will also focus on terminology that the kids will see on the test as well,
Think Alouds: We will be reading a variety of materials this quarter. We will be focusing on saying aloud what is going on in our heads as we read. We will discuss and practice what good readers do while they read. By doing so, we hope to improve our comprehension and will learn many helpful strategies that we will use in our future reading.
You will here me refer to the Standard Course of Study (SCOS) on this section of my webpage. The SCOS states what material should be covered in each subject for each grade level. You can visit the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (www.ncdpi.org) for further information.
Please be sure to ask your child about their day. You are important part of their education and even though you may think they do not want to share what is going on in their lives, you may be surprised how a little attention can go a long way.
