SchoolNotes.com - Linking Educators to the Community

With only about six weeks until EOG tests, we will be moving very quickly in class.  There are four more units to teach, which leaves a little less than two weeks per unit.  It is extremely important that your child be present in class.  They must also not disrupt class, as that takes time away from instruction. I am sending an outline of our plan home with students Wednesday, April 9, so you can see just how much work there is still to do.  If your child must be absent, please make sure they are keeping up with what is being taught that day... thank you.

I have found a great website for help with surface area (from chapter 10) -- www.learner.org/interactives  Click on Geometry 3-D shapes under the Math heading.  This will walk your child through how to find surface area of rectangular prisms as well as cylinders.

Parents, we are sending home daily update sheets with your child.  These forms contain a conduct grade for the day, as well as information about missing homework assignments.  This must be signed by parents on a daily basis.  Unfortunately, there are still a few children not getting their forms signed.  We would appreciate you asking them about these forms.  Also, I am seeing some students continually miss assignments, even though it is documented on their daily update that not turning in work is a problem.  If they continually ignore deadlines and do not turn in work, they run the risk of failing math for the year.  It would be appreciated if you could speak with them about this.

Parents, please continue working with your child on basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems.

Welcome to Miss Gensemer's Webpage. I will be updating weekly with lesson topics and homework assignments. Students, if you are absent, this is a good way to check and see what you missed. Parents, this is a good tool to see what your child is learning. I have also included some links at the bottom of the page to some great activities. Please remember these plans are subject to change, due to more time needed to review topics, special activities, etc.

THE HOMEWORK HOTLINE IS NOW BACK UP AND RUNNING, BUT  PLEASE CHECK YOUR CHILD'S PLANNER DAILY TO ENSURE THEY ARE WRITING THEIR ASSIGNMENTS DOWN.

___________________________________________
Parents, please speak with your child about appropriate behavior in the classroom... we are experiencing a lot more talking in class, ignoring directions given by teachers (insubordination), etc.  This is being documented on the daily behavior sheets, but the behavior is not changing.  We will begin writing up students who violate the rules after having points taken away for the same thing, as well as a note sent home to you.

FYI:  Parents, there is a great math site that can help your child review the topics we discussed in class... students were told to copy the site down in class, but I am putting it here just in case you haven't seen it.

Helpful Hint for Solving Proportions
The steel used to make the Statue of Liberty weighs approx. 125 tons. How many pounds of steel were used?

First, turn the information given into a conversion problem.
125 tons = ______ lbs

Now, put this information into a ratio.
125 tons / ? lbs

Next, create an equivalent ratio using what you already know about pounds and tons.
125 tons / ? lbs = 1 ton / 2,000 lbs

Then, cross-multiply and use variable expressions to find the missing number.
125 tons *2,000 lbs = 1 ton * ?
250,000 lbs = ?

250,000 lbs of steel were used to create the Statue of Liberty.

Converting fractions into decimals

top number (numerator) divided by bottom number (denominator)
ex. 2/5 = 2 divided by 5 = .4

Converting decimals into percents
move the decimal two places to the right
ex: .4 = 40 %
.175 = 17.5 %

Turning percents into decimals
move the decimal two places to the left
ex: 63 % = .63
14.3 % = .143

Turning percents into fractions
move the decimal two places to the left. Next, write the fraction as you would read the decimal, including place value.
ex: 23 % = .23 = 23/100
reduce the fraction to it's simplest form.

Adding Integers
Move to the right on the number line to add a positive number.
Move to the left on the number line to add a negative number.

Subtracting Integers
Move to the left on a number line to subtract a positive number.
Move to the right on a number line to subtract a negative number.

Multiplying Integers
positive times positive = positive
negative times negative = positive
one of each sign = negative

Dividing Integers
positive divided by positive = positive
negative divided by negative = positive
two different signs = negative

Formulas for Area, Circumference, and Volume

Area of a rectangle = L x W
Area of a parallelogram = b x h
Area of a triangle = 1/2x (bxh)
Area of a circle = pi x r2
Circumference = pi x d or 2 x pi x r

(pi = 3.1415927... rounded to 3.14)

Volume of a rectangular prism = L x W x H
Volume of a triangular prism = B x h

(B = area of base, h= height of prism)
to find area of base, use formula for area of a triangle.
