As a new year begins it is important to remember that a solid schedule for homework will save you and your child a lot of headaches and anger. Set a time for everyday that schoolwork (reading and/or homework) will be completed. This is preferably before television, play, computer, etc. When your child tries to change this, your response needs to be, "When your schoolwork is done you can..." Giving a positive sounding response always sounds better than saying "no". Tell your children what you will do or what they can do, not what they can't do. (More about this in the next letter).
As your school counselor this year I am excited to be involved with your children. Anytime you need parenting advice or to let me know of a crisis in your family, feel free to call or come by to talk to me. I will have a lot of classroom time so calling to make an appointment would be best if you can. You can reach me at 704-639-3009 extension 107.
