September 8 - 12

This week has been declared by the Governor of North Carolina as Graduation Awareness Week!  Wednesday has been declared by the Rowan-Salisbury School System as Graduation Awareness Day!  I plan to make this day special!   I will share with my students my high school memories, and how important my graduating class is to me!  I hope some of my fellow class members will visit us!!  I have received several emails from classmates too far to come, but have sent a message to my students!  I am proud that I am a product of the Salisbury City School system - graduating from Boyden High School, now Salisbury High!!  Go BHS - 67!!!!

Fourth graders will continue using their reading books. This week we will read the story, Titanic. This is a favorite topic, and we will have many exciting activities.  We will see a video documentary about the ship.  Center work will be held on Thursday and Friday.  Each student will receive a book to read on their own about the Titanic.  This will be our first book report.  We will make a foldable to use as our vehicle for reporting. Fourth graders will miss one day of class due to a field trip with their homerooms.  No work will be missed in our class.  Our Spelling topic will be the doubling rule for one syllable words. Please remember to study the words each night. We will also begin Writer's Workshop this week.  Notebook writing will be on our agenda!  We will also type our Bio-poems and finish our group stories!

Fifth graders will continue the novel, Old Yeller. We will work on open book tests, reading silently, journal writing, project work and presentations, and chapter work. Bio-poems and group stories will be finished this week.  Our first vocabulary unit will also continue.  Unit I test will be Thursday. Friday will be homeroom activities that accompany their Science units.

Fourth grade Math continues the study of money dealing with making change, rounding, and ordering numbers.  We will also work with bar graphs.

Fifth grade Math will work with decimals and begin algebra. Don't forget the weekly optional assignment -Math Stars! These are due on Friday. TANGLERS were introduced last Friday and we had fun!  This Friday will be another Tangler day!

PLEASE encourage your student to check over all work before it is turned in. I am seeing careless errors that could be spotted by students - no names of papers, leaving an entire page incomplete, and no capital letters or end puncuation marks with sentences. Neatness is a quality that is also necessary!  These are important life skills that we need to practice each day!  100% effort has been promised by our class members!

Again, feel free to contact me at anytime. I will send home weekly papers for you to view and sign each Wednesday in their Wednesday folder.
