FIRST GRADE: We are learning the first grade high frequency words. Students are reading fiction and non-fiction books and working on comprehension skills as well as learning to write good sentences. Title I first grade students are using Prescriptive Instruction, an intensive computer intervention and remediation program, in their homeroom class and also in the Title I Lab. We are using another computer learning tool, Key Skills, to help students master necessary reading skills.
First graders may check-out books from the Title I Lab. Parents, please read with your child each night and help him/her remember to return the book to the lab so they can check out another one.
THIRD GRADE: Students are working on improving vocabulary and comprehension skills by reading fiction and non-fiction books. We are also working on reading and spelling all the high frequency words (K-3) correctly. Third graders are enjoying writing good paragraphs. Some other skills we are working on include; author's viewpoint, summarizing, main idea and details, comparing and contrasting, sequencing, cause and effect and making connections. Third Graders also use Prescriptive Instruction to reinforce and practice necessary skills.
Third graders may check-out books from the TitleI Lab to read at home. Please encourage your child to take advantage of this extra opportunity to have books to read. As soon as one book is completed and returned, another one may be checked-out.
This year I am working in the third grade classrooms on a rotating schedule in the areas of math and writing. I work in the classroom with small groups of students to reinforce skills the classroom teacher has taught.
