To The Seagulls' 6th Grade Language Arts Page

  1. This page was created to inform both students and parents of material being covered and students' daily assignments for sixth grade (Seagulls). This year in Language Arts we will be learning how to be effective communicators. We will focus on grammar, mechanics, spelling, and types of sentences. The lenghty process of writing requires a lot of students' time in order to improve writing skills and techniques. Students will be required to evaluate, explore, and analyze the use of the problem/solution process and/or create an argument that persuades. All students must be able to think and plan quickly and elaborate on a topic using supporting details.

Students will read a wide range of literature from many periods and from different genres to build an understanding of the many dimentions of literature and then apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate texts. Through their reading, students will develop an understanding of and respect for diversity. LITERATURE offers students a chance to see the world and live other lives vicariously. Literary terms, figurative language, literal language, and outside reading for pleasure all give your child an insight into life and the world around him./her. Each genre brings something new and different to his/her experiences and makes the classroom more interesting. The reading series this year will be challenging, but it is based on state standards and will prepare students for end of grade testing.
Students on the Seagull team can expect some homework nightly. Two tools to ensure that your student is doing his/her work are: THE HOMEWORK HOTLINE 704-633-9561 EXT. 6400 for 6th grade Seagulls, and homework planners that are given to each student at the beginning of the school year. Teachers post class assignments as well as homework assignments on the board each day. Students need to record these assignments and any other important information in their planners as a reminder of the day's events. Parents need to check homework pads nightly in order to assure that your child is completing assignments and also for notes that may be added concerning your child's work or progress. Any notes sent home in the planner needs to be signed
HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD STUDY 1. Call the homework hotline if you have any questions concerning an assignment. (704-633-9561) EXT. 6400 for the Seagull team. Make sure that your child is writing down assignments on a daily basis by checking his/her planner each night. At home try to provide
your child with a quiet place to study, and set a certain time that your child is required to study, read. or complete assignments each night. Also encourage your child to explain the PBS Point System for improving discipline in our school. We will be rewarding positive behavior and hope that all of our students can earn this award.

Sixth GradeSeagulls---During August and September students will focus on unit 1 "Relationships" and in this unit students will read selections that illustrate how people are interconnected to part of a larger world. The unit is divided into two parts, "Reaching Out" and "Facing Choices." Selections in both parts emphasize the importance of people connecting with each other. In "Reaching Out"individuals expand their horizons and extend themselves to others to enrich their lives. In "Facing Choices" the selections reinforce the idea that people are connected by showing how the decisions of individuals can have far reaching effects.

Sixth grade Seagulls during the months of October and November will be reading from unit 4 "Strange Goings-On." Many of the selections in unit four focus on strange or fantastic characaters, settings, or events. This unit has the ability to transport readers to strange new worlds where anything can happen. In this unit students can read selecations that will alternately surprise them and make their spines tingle. Selections from a wide range of genres and perspecatives ensure that all students will find something to intrigue and engage them.

Please take any opportunity that you have to look over your child's work and
be actively involved in your child's education by checking over your child's homework, planner, and calling the homework hotline.
