WELCOME! I am the Title I Reading Specialist for Second Grade. Here at NRE, we are fortunate to have a large Title I staff. I am one of four Title I Reading Specialist (along with Mrs. Linker, Mrs. McLaughlin, and Mrs. Vogler). We also have a Title I Reading tutor (Mrs. Taylor) that works with the students in the Waterford Lab. Through the Title I Reading
Team, we are able to serve each grade level.
PRESCRIPTIVE INSTRUCTION
You may have heard your child talk about a program that we are using at North Rowan Elementary this year called Prescriptive Instruction (or PI for short). The elementary schools in the Rowan Salisbury School System are fortunate enough to be able to offer the program to our students. Prescriptive Instruction is used to accelerate the learning of our students. I thought that I would try to answer any questions that you might have about this program.
WHAT IS PRESCRIPTIVE INSTRUCTION? Prescriptive Instruction is a Web-based, intervention and instruction tool for Reading and Math. It improves reading and mathematic skills by using a proven pedagogy of tutorials, practice exercises, and graded activities that allow students to learn at their own paces and paths. Prescriptive Instruction's curriculum is research-based, and aligned with state and national education standards.
HOW DOES IT WORK? Prescriptive Instruction assesses students with a Diagnostic/Formative Assessment and then automatically determines their skill levels and places them into their own, individualized learning program. Each lesson is designed to ensure that students are actively processing, storing and retrieving information. The comprehensive library of K-5 lessons are designed to ensure mastery of essential skills for Reading, Language Arts, and Math. The curriculum is provided in an engaging, interactive, and high impact learning environment. Students work with real world, relevant examples.
HOW DOES MY CHILD USE IT AT SCHOOL? All of my Title I students will go to one of three small computer labs. During the week, we will be working on Reading four days a week and Math on one day. I will also be working with students in a small group. I will not only utilize the PI recommended activities, but I will also assign specific areas that I feel need to be addressed when necessary.
HOW CAN I USE THIS RESOURCE AT HOME? One of the great things about this program is that it is web-based, which means that if you have internet access (for example: at home or the public library), your child can log on to the website and work on the program. The children learned how to do this at school. If you can get them to the web-site, they should be able to use it at home as well.
