2007-2008 School Year
Welcome to my web page. I hope that you will visit it often to hear about the wonderful and exciting things that are happening at North Rowan Elementary.
Our PTA officers for the 2007-2008 school year are: PresidentRhonda Smith, Vice-President-David Bates, Secretary-Maria Moore, and Treasurer-Kelly Smith. A big thank you to these fine folks for volunteering their time and talents.
We are continuing to work with students who need extra help using the Prescriptive Instruction program. It is a web -base program designed to help students improve their skills in the area of Math and Reading. It allows students to work at his/her own pace and level. Also students may access this program anywhere that has internet access. Our Title I teachers are using this with their students to help improve basic reading and comprehension. Mrs. Miller, our Math tutor will be using the Math component with her students in our new Prescriptive Instruction lab. Classroom teachers may also access the program in their classrooms.
We are continuing with our Breakfast Book Club. This year we will expand the program to include second graders as well as first graders. There were three dates scheduled for second grade prior to the winter break and the first grade book club began Janurary 29 with a standing room only crowd. The second book club was held on February 20. We were pleased to have Dr. Judy Grissom along with Dr. Truett's Readers Theater class from Catawba. our third book club was held on March 19. We were pleased to have Ms. Jessica Jacobs, Miss North Carolina with us to read the story Giraffe's Can't Dance by Giles Andreae and Guy Parker-Recs. We were also pleased to have Delores Morris Director of Human Resources for Rowan-Salsibury Schools in attendance. Each student and parent who attended received a copy of the featured book along with an activity to take home to be completed. The last date for our book club was April 16 . Our first grade teachers put on the play The Three Little Pigs that was written and adapted by our Media Specialist Mr. Johnathan Smith. Thanks to our TARGET grant we can have fun while learning to read new books together!
Our school recently received and was presented the NC Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development prestigious Light House Award. It was given in honor of creative and innovated ways to improve student achievement. Mr.Hampton and our School Improvement team attended the associations conference on February 7 and accepted the award on behalf of our school. Way to go STEAMERS!
We began our after school C.L.A.S.S. program on February 11. Students in grades 3-5 were invited to attend the program based on pre-EOG and EOG scores. We currently have 66 students enrolled in C.L.A.S.S ( community learning after school support). The program is Monday-Thursday from 2:45-5:45. Each day students receive a snack, extra help with homework, tutoring to improve critical thinking skills, and there is also an enrichment activity scheduled each day. The program is made possible through a grant and in collaboration with Communities in Schools and Rowan Partners for Education. We are delighted to report that we are seeing results with our C.LA.S.S. students. Their third quarter report cards showed an improvement across the grade levels in most or all of the content areas. Approximately 25 of our students were honored for making the A/AB honor roll. Way to go boys and girls!
We invite everyone to come and see the exciting things that are going on at North Rowan Elementary.
