WEBPAGE CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION.......

The first quarter proved to be a transitional quarter for most students to my higher-order thinking style of delivery and my expectations.  We quickly focused our attention on the Algebra Goals in the 8th grade needing to be mastered and developed proportional and reasoning skills in 7th and 6th grade.

I look forward to having ALL of my students meet or exceed my expectations during the second quarter through our use of PBL(Problem Based Learning) and Cooperative Learning Environments.

Afterschool tutorials are still being offered on Wednesday's from 3:30-4:30pm. Please allow atleast two days notice if interested.

2007-2008

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL MY STUDENTS FOR THEIR DILIGENT EFFORTS DURING OUR ALGEBRA UNIT.  YOU WILL SEE THE BENEFITS IN YEARS TO COME.

As 2nd quarter comes to an end today, I would like to thank those parents who have came by or called to check their child's academic progress.  In our classes we have been finishing up our Algebra Unit by using the computer-based program Classscape.  Our lesson's have been centered around the NCSCOS, RSS Pacing Guide, and Learning Bridges.  With 3rd quarter starting on Wednesday, January 23rd, it is imperative that your child remain focused and adhere to ALL school and classroom rules, procedure's and policies.

In the next coming month's your child will be assessed by taking a Benchmark test designed by the RSS Accountability Department.  Your child will be given another school-based mock writing test in preparation for the State Writing Test in March.  In addition to these assessment's your child will also be given a Math test called the Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test that is designed to determine appropriate math placement next year.  It is with these assessment's, in addition to the DATA INTERPRETATION AND ANALYSIS UNIT your child will be required to master for my class, that we can not afford for your them to miss class due to violations of ANY policies(tardies, uniform, bus incidents, misbehavior, etc.).

REMINDER: PARENTS AND STUDENTS ARE REMINDED OF THE SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICY AS THE WEATHER STARTS TO TURN WARMER. SHORTS, SKIRTS AND SKORTS MUST BE THE LENGTH EQUIVALENT TO OR LONGER THAN FINGER TIP LENGTH, WHEN ARMS ARE AT THE STUDENTS SIDE IN A RELAXED POSITION. AS WELL AS THIS, ALL UNDERSHIRTS SHOULD BE THE SAME COLOR AS THEIR UNIFORM SHIRT OR WHITE. ADDITIONALLY, NO CANDY OR GUM IS ALLOWED AT SCHOOL AND ALL PERSONAL ELCTRONIC'S(EXCEPT THOSE APPROVED BY RSS; IE. CALCULATOR'S, FLASH DRIVES) SHOULD BE LEFT IN STUDENT'S LOCKER UNITL END OF SCHOOL DAY.

In compliance with federal law, the Rowan-Salisbury School System administers all educational programs, employment activities, and admissions without discrimination because of race, religion, national or ethnic origin, color, age, military service, disability, or gender, except where exemption is appropriate and allowed by law.

By now your child should have ALL necessary materials for my Accelerated Math Class in Pre-Algebra. Students in this class will be expected to grasp concepts at a much faster pace than my Course 2 students, due to the fact that two curriculum's(7th grade and 8th grade Math) are being taught . With the 2006-2007 EOG Math results, some students no longer meet the established requirements to take the Accelerated Math Class and will be transferred into Course 2 Math Classes. Students in the Accelerated Math Class will have the opportunity to take Algebra I next school year in the 8th grade, depending on Iowa Algebra Aptitude and Math EOG test results. Course 2 students will be expected to master the rigorous North Carolina Standard Course of Study curriculum designed just for 7th grade. All 7th grade students will take the IAAAT(Iowa Algebra Aptitude Achievement Test) to determine math placement next 2008-2009 school year.

Items needed EVERYDAY for my Math class include: (2) three ring binders, loose leaf paper, 6-inch rule, 5-color coded dividers, pack of pencils, colored pencils, Graph Paper, Dry Erase Markers, (3) blue pocket folders.

During the 1st Quarter, we will review and discuss our NUMBERS AND NUMBER SENSE UNIT: In this Unit, we will review the rules of computation, discuss rational, irrational numbers and the Pythagorean Theorem.

During 2nd Quarter, we will continue with our use of ratios, proportions, unit analysis, conversion factors, similar figures and the use of scales before moving into our ALGEBRA UNIT.

By 3rd quarter, we will have mastered the Algebra Unit and move onto DATA INTERPRETATION AND ANALYSIS UNIT and prepare for the GEOMETRY UNIT.

During 4th Quarter, we will finish the GEOMETRY UNIT
and focus in on EOG Review Test Taking Strategies.

ALL MATH MATERIALS ARE NEEDED EVERYDAY!!! NO EXCEPTIONS.

The Notebook is counted as a Class Participation Grade, which is counted 65% of grade.  In addition to required materials, students will be expected to bring Agendas, Textbook and an AR book to class everyday as a means of communication and organization. When your child fails to bring and utilize the necessary materials into the classroom, his/her learning is greatly diminished.  Every student was supplied with an Agenda at the beginning of school for use in EVERY classroom.  These Agendas are a vital part of your child's organization and communication for school.  If your child has lost his/her Agenda, a new one can be purchased for $5.00 in the school's office.  Please ask to speak to Mrs. Pala.

Please encourage your child to stay focused in class, take notes and always pay close attention.

Any parent/guardian wishing to schedule a team conference/individual conference can do so by calling 704.639.3018 EXT. 238 and leave a voice message.

As always, MY DOOR IS OPEN TO ANYONE AT ANYTIME.

PLEASE VISIT YOUR CHILD'S CLASSROOM.

************************************************************************** The year that the Math curriculum changed, we adopted a new textbook. The Holt Math Textbook series is now used, in addition to the Glencoe Algebra 1 and Holt Pre-Algebra text for Accelerated Math Classes. This year in my classroom your child WILL learn how to:

ROUND NUMBERS, WRITE NUMBERS IN STANDARD FORM, COMPARE AND ORDER DECIMALS, "CORRECTLY" DO ORDER OF OPERATIONS, WRITE NUMBER'S IN SCIENTIFIC NOTATION, USE PERFECT SQUARES AND SQUARE ROOTS; ADD, SUBTRACT, MULTIPLY AND DIVIDE INTEGERS AND VARIABLE EXPRESSIONS USING THE RULES OF COMPUTATION; WRITE RATIOS AND RATES, FIND UNIT RATES AND UNIT PRICES, WRITE AND SOLVE PROPORTIONS, FIND MEASUREMENTS OF SCALE DRAWINGS AND MODELS FROM WORD PROBLEMS; USE ENGLISH CONVERSION FACTORS AND USE THE STEP METHOD TO CONVERT METRIC UNITS; DEFINE AND DRAW CORRECTLY: POINTS, SEGMENTS, RAYS, LINES, ANGLES, PARALLEL LINES, INTERSECTING LINES AND THE TYPES OF ANGLES FORMED BY A TRANSVERSAL; DEFINE : MIDPOINTS, SEGMENT BISECTORS, PERPENDICULAR BISECTORS, ANGLE BISECTORS, CONGRUENT ANGLES AND PARALLEL LINES, DRAW CORRECTLY: TRIANGLES, POLYGONS, PARALLELOGRAMS, TRAPEZOIDS, RHOMBUSES, RECTANGLES, SQUARES AND PENTAGONS; USE FORMULAS: TO FIND THE MISSING SIDE OF A RIGHT TRIANGLE USING THE PYTHAGOREAN THEOREM AND THE DISTANCE BETWEEN TWO POINTS USING THE DISTANCE FORMULA(WHICH BY THE WAY ARE VERY SIMILAR), FIND THE MISSING ANGLE OF A TRIANGLE, FIND THE PERIMETER AND AREA OF PLANE FIGURES, FIND THE CIRCUMFERENCE AND AREA OF A CIRCLE, DRAW 3-DIMENSIONAL FIGURES, FIND THEIR SURFACE AREA AND VOLUME, PLOT COORDINATES, TRANSLATE AND REFLECT FIGURES, WRITE RULES FOR TRANSFORMATIONS, FIND SLOPE OF A LINE, LOCATE THE Y- INTERCEPT, USE THE SLOPE INTERCEPT FORM TO GRAPH A LINEAR EQUATION, USE A FUNCTION TABLE TO FIND SOLUTIONS TO LINEAR AND NONLINEAR EQUATIONS; WRITE EQUATIONS: USING TWO POINTS OR ONE POINT AND SLOPE, EVALUATE ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS AND NUMBER PATTERNS AND GRAPH INEQUALITIES; INTERPRET DATA: MAKE HISTOGRAMS, ANALYZE GRAPHS, BOX-N-WHISKERS, MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY, AND DRAW DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES OF 3D FIGURES BASED ON TOP, SIDE, FRONT, ONE-POINT PERSPECTIVE AND CORNER VIEWS.

This year my accelerated teaching style will emphasize and employ relative purpose, a sense of empowerment plus responsibility by building on strengths and past knowledge, using algebraic and scientific higher level thought processes. The Aristocrat team your child is on needs parental assistance to accomplish this goal. When your child comes home, please look in their Agenda for assignments and sign it and their homework when they are done. Take time to drop in on your child at least once a month to see what your child is learning first hand. If your schedule does not allow this, then try to volunteer at the school, join and be active in the PTA, MAVS and BOOSTER Clubs. We need you to be as visible as possible to keep a good healthy relationship between your child and the school.

Students can continue to practice lessons by using the online textbook tutorial. Log onto www.go.hrw.com. and follow the directions for EXTRA practice problems. To register for the online textbook, please go to www.hrw.com. From there follow the instructions given to register for the online textbook.

Parents and students are reminded that when students become eighth graders(2008-2009), they will have a new curriculum(currently on delayed status) and continue expanding their knowledge of :CONES, PYRAMIDS, TRIG FUNCTIONS(SINE, COSINE, TANGENT), POLYNOMIALS, CUBES AND CUBE ROOTS, SYSTEM OF EQUATIONS AND MULTI - STEP EQUATIONS, LINES OF BEST FIT, MATRIXE'S and DATA DISPLAYS.

Remember to study notes and practice problems everyday. Make up your own problems to assess your complete understanding of a concept. If you get bored... help me write more higher level thinking EOG style questions for use as POD's.
