Welcome to a brand new year!
2008-9 here we come!

This year should be full of excitement as students depart from elementary school and head up onto Middle school.  We here at North Welcome the challenge of making the transition from school to school smooth and easy.  It won't be easy, and there may be stress, students may take respite in the fact that others feel the same way they do!

This year in math we will be taking previous concepts and building on them.  Fractions, decimals and percents will be a large part of the curriculum.

Geometry is also an intergral part of th
                     Rules for fractions

Geometry is a large part of the 6th grade curriculum

Formulas
Area of a rectangle     A= lw
Area of a Parallelogram  A= bh
Area of a triangle  A= 1/2(bh) or BH/2
Area of a Circle A= pi (rxr)
Circumference of a circle  C = pi(d)  Or pi(2)(r)

Algebra -it's not as scary as it sounds!

A + 34 = 57   A= ???
J minus 5 is the same as J-5
If x=5 and y=6 solve the following:
        2(x+y)= ???

Word Problems play a major roles on the E.O.G.'s.  They will be intergrated into all of the subjects taught throughout the year.  See if you can solve this one!

Uncle Henry was driving to Halifax when he spotted a big green gorilla on the side of the road. He screeched to a stop, jumped out of his car. He saw the outline of a number on the gorilla. He couldn't quite see the number, but he knew it was a 4 digit number. And:
    1) He remembered seeing a number 1.

    2) In the hundred's place he remembers the number is 3 times the number in the thousand's place.

    3) He said the number in the one's place is 4 times the number in the ten's place.

    4) Finally he said the number 2 is sitting in the thousand's place.

What is the number?

**See teacher for the answer!**

Technology

Throughout the year, both science and math will be integrated.  The computer lab will play a major part of both courses.  Students will learn basic computer skills on the word processor, inspiratons, appleworks presentations, and spreadsheets.

Here is an example of the spreadsheets that we will be using in class.  We will be learning about cells, rows, columns, formulas, labels, and values.
