Mrs. Timmerman's Masters of Mathematics

Welcome Back to School!

We start the year off on a great note as North Rowan Middle made high growth on EOG tests for the 2007-2008 school year.  Let's keep the momentum going and insure even greater success this year.

We will be following the 8th Grade Pacing Guide as we work through the North Carolina 8th Grade Standard Course of Study throughout the year.

We will begin with Rational and Irrational Numbers and here are a few tips:

Rational numbers include the counting numbers, whole numbers, integers and repeating or terminating decimals. When performing operations on these numbers, remember these rules.

Adding Numbers with the Same Sign- Find the sum of the absolute values of the numbers and use the sign in the answer.

Examples:

Two Positive Numbers:

3 + 3 = |3| + |3| = 6, signs are positive so the answer is positive 6.

Two Negative Numbers:

-3 + -3 = |3| + |3| = 6, signs are negative so the answer is -6.

Adding Numbers with Different Signs - Find the difference of the numbers and use the sign of the larger number in the answer.

Example:

-6 + 4 = |-6| - |4| = 6 - 4 = 2, the 6 is larger and negative so the answer is -2.

Subtracting Numbers - Keep the sign of the first number and change subtraction to addition and add the opposite of the second number. Then follow the rules for addition.

Example:

-4 - 2 = -4 + -2 = -6

Multiply or divide numbers with the same sign, the answer is positive.

Multiply or divide numbers with different signs, the answer is negative.

NORTH ROWAN MIDDLE SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICY

The faculty and staff of North Rowan Middle School take great pride in the appearance of our students. It is expected that all students will comply with the established uniform policy. However, your help is needed with enforcing the policy by ensuring that your child(ren) wears the appropriate clothing. Research has shown that the wearing of school uniforms helps to curtail discipline problems, thus promoting a safe and orderly learning environment for all children.

Students who choose not to be appropriately dressed will be asked to contact parents/guardians to bring them a change of clothing. The student will be sent to ISS for the remainder of the day if  parents/guardians are unable to bring him/her a change of clothes. Please read over the uniform policy very carefully and discuss it with your child(ren).
