It's hard to believe that we have reached the home stretch of our kindergarten year! Fourth quarter progress reports will be sent home on May 8th, and will give you a good idea of what you and your child will need to work on to get ready for first grade. Please continue to help your child with any letters, numbers, or high frequency words he or she may not have mastered yet.
Reading:
We have now covered the entire alphabet. Your child should be able to recognize and write all capital and lowercase letters and identify the sounds they make. We have introduced all 25 oof the high frequency words that kindergarten children are expected to read and write. A list of the words your child still needs to work on has been sent home. Please practice these words. The flashcards on this webpage will be useful for this review. At this time of the year, students should be able to write a simple story with two or more sentences, using inventive spelling, beginning and ending letter sounds, and our high frequency words.
Math:
By now, your child should be able to recognize and write the numbers 1-30. Students should also be able to count out objects for each of these numbers. Please practice at home. We will also be introducing simple addition and subtraction.
Science/Social Studies:
We have enjoyed a unit of Study on Spring. Students have been watching for signs of spring. We've been watching a nest of baby bluebirds and have 5 caterpillars that we're hoping will develop into butterflies before the school year ends. We've also enjoyed studying nutrition and fitness.
We look forward to a trip to Dan Nicholas Park and many other fun activities as the school year draws to an end. Thanks for your support in helping your child have a successful kindergarten year!
