Procedures: | * Discuss real-world uses of fractions * Fraction vocabulary * Odyssey lesson 56288 on comparing fractions with like denominators / like numerators * Mill to music to compare fraction on whiteboard to other’s. | * Go over warm-up ?’s * Tell scenerio’s where it was important to compare fractions with unlike numerators & denominators * Model cross multiplying * Motions/song on cross multiplying * Solve scenario problems from set using cross multiplying * Play Fighting Fractions | * Discuss Identity property * Odyssey MA5417 – students do problems on white boards * Color by Number activity sheet | * Review factor rainbows & finding GCF * Model method 1: simplest form by dividing by GCF * Model method 2: GCF by repeated dividing until in simplest form. * Four corners: given fraction, put in simplest form & go to corner with correct fraction | * Discuss importance of simplest form (tests!) * Flipchart on simplest form * Use whiteboard to complete practice problems on flipchart….compare answer with partner * Students write a fraction covered by each “trick” on an index card, & a fraction that is not in lowest terms Show cards to a partner as they tell which “trick” that fraction is an example of & which is not in lowest terms.
