Language Arts

We will read the story entitlled "Here Be Dragons."  This is a short short story that can be compared and

contrasted with the story, "The Smallest Dragonrider."  The literary focus is compare and contrast.

KEY WORDS and STEMS will be studies on a weekly basis.

Spelling will include HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS and KEY WORDS

(You will find the KEY WORDS on flashcards in this lesson-just click on flashcards).

STANDARDS ARE STUDIED AND TESTED ON A DAILY BASIS.

The WRITING FOCUS will include NARRATIVE WRITING and Responding to Literature.

We are engaged in independent reading which requires outside reading for homework reading.

The independent reading and the outside reading is documented in a journal that is kept

and maintained by each student.  They must log in each time they read and write an

entry for every fifty pages read.  These entries must be geared to six assigned strategy

prompts that have been assigned for this reading project.  They must read at

least (500) five hundred pages eacjh (9) nine week period. This reading activity will give

each student (2) test grades to average into the final (9) nine week grade.  They may also

read another (100) pages and earn (10) ten extra point.  This is a wonderful way to enhance

their language arts grade, not to mention how much it will help them to gain more reading

expertise and raise their MAP READING scores.
