ACADEMIC SKILLS CLASS—COURSE DESCRIPTION/SYLLABUS

Mrs. Mary McDaniel

OFFICE HOURS:         Mon. - Fri. 7:45-8:00

Academic skills class is a class designed to assist students in a wide variety of areas.  Depending upon the individual student’s needs, they may receive assistance in the areas of HSAP Exam preparation, assistance from the student’s academic classes, and stated IEP needs.  Various activities will be assigned to assist students in these areas.  I will be working on various learning strategies throughout the year. The strategies will help students with their regular academic classes, standardized testing, and overall “long-range” success.

The grading procedure is as follows:

1st Move Assignment Notebook, Word of the Day, and Journal Entry:  This is the first assignment of the day and will be graded at the end of each week for a test grade.

Grades for activities listed on IEP.

Grades on strategy lessons and quizzes.

A daily grade of zero will be given if no effort is made to complete assignments.

All grades will be averaged at the end of the nine weeks. The grading scale is as follows:

A: 93-100          B: 85-92            C: 78-84            D: 70-77           F: 69-0

ALL STUDENTS WILL BE ALLOWED TO MAKE UP MISSED WORK.  STUDENTS HAVE ONE WEEK (5days)

FROM ABSENCE TO TURN IN WORK MISSED.

Class Procedures:

Students will have an assignment upon entering the classroom (First Move, WOTD, and a Journal Entry).  They are to begin this assignment immediately after the tardy bell rings.  There will then be a lesson or strategy taught (this includes introduction of lesson, practice and review).  Time will also be allocated for homework, tests, research, and any extra assistance needed from other academic classes.  Please note that the class is only (50) minutes long, therefore, homework should be completed at home.  Homework should only be worked on in my class if the student had difficulty completing the assignment.  I will not allow homework to be worked on in class if it was not attempted at home first.   At no time is a student to enter class without something to study from another academic class.  This will result in a zero grade for the day.

offenses, you will receive an                                                                          automatic OFFICE REFERRAL

Grading Procedure:  All assignments and test count equally worth 100 points. Every week I grade Word of the Day Quizzes, 1st move, and Journal entries in notebooks, and weekly goals and objectives.

Testing:  Each and Every Friday there is a Word of the Day quiz.  They are given a word everyday and are asked to look up the definition, part of speech, and write one complete sentence.  They are then tested on  Friday.
