**** Welcome Parents and Students 2009-2010 ****

Have a TERRIFIC summer!

Repeat after me, "Asking questions during math class is a good thing."

Please remember to go over the sample problems that we did together in your composition notebook before doing your home-learning assignment.  Do the home-learning EXACTLY the same way that we did the sample problems together during class.

I tutor on Monday morning at 8:25.  There is also an after-school tutoring schedule with other math teachers.  You are required to attend tutoring if you do not have at least a "B" average.  Come to tutoring.  Learn what you don't understand.  Be responsible.

I am most easily reached by email. Please note my EMAIL ADDRESS:  ScheinblumB@dadeschools.net

Parents, thank you for the support and encouragement that you give to your wonderful children.  Your excellent parenting is evident in our classroom everyday.

============================================

      Mathematics Classroom Procedures and Rules

Be prepared for class.
• Quietly go to your assigned seat.
• You must be in your seat when the tardy bell rings.  I begin teaching promptly when the bell has rung.
• Have your home-learning, correcting pen, calculator, and supplies on your desk.
• You MUST have 2 sharpened pencils and a red pen for every class.
• Look at the front board to see the DO NOW activity to be started immediately.
• Have your materials ready before the I begin class.
• Sample problems, class work, and home-learning will all relate to, and reinforce the lesson of the day.

Pay close attention to the teacher during lessons.
• I will teach you all that you need to know in order to do well in class and on your home-learning.
• You need to be in class, be attentive, and show great effort everyday.
• Please, do not disturb other students.  They are paying attention and mastering the material.
• When you have a question, always raise your hand and wait patiently.  I will call on you.  Listen while other questions are being asked and answered.  I encourage you to ask questions when needed.
• Disruptive behavior and/or talking without permission will NOT be tolerated.  Consequences include: (1) lowering of your conduct grade, (2) parent contact, (3) referral to the counselor,  (4) referral to the Administration.

Heading your paper:
• Put the correct heading on all papers.  Full credit will NOT be given without a complete heading.

Left Hand Corner
1. Textbook Page Number(s)
2. The problem numbers to be completed

        Right Hand Corner
1. Full Name and your assigned class number (1 - 25)
2, Date
3. Period Number: (1 - 8) and Areas of Interaction.

*** Each assignment must have the answers HIGHLIGHTED in YELLOW.  The highlighting is part of the homework assignment and is to be done AT HOME.  Appropriate problem solution steps MUST be shown in order to receive credit. ***

While working during class:
• Begin working on your assignment immediately.
• Raise your hand if you need additional help.  My job is to help you.
• There is no talking without permission.  When appropriate, collaborative learning groups will be assigned, as well as study-buddy teams.
• Always remain in your seat unless permission is given to move about the room.
• There is NEVER gum chewing, eating, or drinking in the classroom.  Chewing will definitely LOWER your conduct grade.

Use of the restroom:
• Use the restroom before class.
• A pass is always available if needed.
• If possible, try to wait until after the lesson so that you will not miss valuable instruction.

Dismissal from class:
• When the bell rings, quietly exit and proceed to your next class.
• Leave the room neat and clean.  Put trash in one of the 3 trash cans.  Everyone helps to keep the room neat and attractive.
• NEVER write on the desks or textbooks.

If you are absent:
• You are responsible for making up all missed home-learning and class assignments.  Work that is not made up will result in a zero grade.  Try not to let this happen!
• I tutor on Monday mornings at 8:20 AM.
• See me to arrange for make-up tests.  Make-up work is your responsibility.  Be responsible!  Find out what you have missed and then  bring it to me at the end of the lesson or on Monday morning tutoring.

Evaluation will be based on:
• Home-learning, class work, quizzes, tests, participation, and projects.
• Home-learning is graded each day.  Have your red pen ready.  Answers are to be highlighted in yellow at home.  Home-learning is assigned almost every day including Friday.
• I try not to assign homework and projects over long holiday breaks.

MATERIALS LIST:
•  a folder with pockets and prongs
•  composition book (usually black and white cover)
•  MANY #2 pencils (everyday)
•  TWO red or green pens for checking work – (2 is a minimum.) When you are unprepared it slows the class.
•  Yellow highlighter (for home-learning answers)
•  wide-ruled notebook paper (lots of it)
•  erasers
•  graph paper for algebra students
•  Simple 4 function FCAT CALCULATOR
*** These items will be needed during every class.

The composition notebook is used for: APPROACHES TO LEARNING.  It will contain all important information including study tips, time management skills, math formulas, start-up drills, sample problems (just like the home-learning problems each night), and class notes.

Materials and notebooks may be checked for a grade, as the teacher deems necessary.  Use the notebook sample problems to help you do your home-learning correctly.

Parents:  Thank you for your support and consideration.  Our team effort will make this a great year for your child.  Once again, I can be reached most easily by EMAIL:  ScheinblumB@dadeschools.net

I am looking forward to another successful, productive, and rewarding school year.  This is a high school course.  You will want to maintain an "A" or "B" average in order to advance to the following math course next year.  You need to show MASTERY of the subject matter.  A final grade of "C" or lower indicates that the student should take the class over in order to master the material.  If you work as hard as I do everyday, you will achieve your goal.

Sincerely,
Mr. Scheinblum
