Fourth Quarter History Project
American History
8th Grade
Name ________________________________________ Date __________ Period __ Due date _____________
The American History Fourth Quarter Project should include a written report displayed on a project board. Select a topic from the topic list. Your topic must be approved by Mrs. Davis. If you decide to change your topic, you must get approval from Mrs. Davis.
The 12 Steps to Creating An American History Fourth Quarter Project
Step 1- Select a topic
Topic : ________________________________________________________________________________
Create a thesis statement or a proposal that you intend to prove.
Thesis statement: ________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________
Step 2 - Research the topic using the internet, your textbook, books, and encyclopedias. Please start you¡¦re your textbook. Gather information from at least (3) different sources that will support your thesis statement or prove your proposal.
Step 3 - Read the information and take notes using a spiral notebook, index cards or sheets of notebook paper. Create a bibliography note card for each source that you use or you may use the media centers research note sheets.
Step 4 - Organize your notes by creating an outline for your written report.
Step 5 - Write your introduction. Introduction/ Purpose ( One page only)
Introduce your topic with a ¡§hook¡¨. A hook in a research paper can be a quote, a strong statement or a proposal that you will prove. Clearly state your thesis within the first paragraph so the reader knows the topic. In one or two paragraphs, explain why your topic is important within American history or the world. You may include a personal note to your introduction by stating what you found interesting about your topic. Remember, your introduction will be on one page and should be one to two paragraphs.
Step 6- Body of Research (minimum 4 pages and maximum of 8 pages)
This section should be written separate from the introduction page, conclusion page and bibliography page. Give background information, historical summary, challenges, accomplishments, impact on American society, (for events ¡V timeline, causes, effects, long term effects/results) on your topic. Summarize and paraphrase research information in your own words. DO NOT COPY SENTENCES FROM THE BOOK OR CUT/PASTE FROM THE INTERNET. You may create subtopics.
If you use sentences from a source, make sure that you use MLA in-text citation method. A signal phrase indicates that something taken from a source (a quotation, summary, paraphrase or fact) is about to be used; usually the signal phrases includes the author¡¦s name. The parenthetical reference, which comes after the cited material, normally includes at least a page number. Ex: One driver, Peter Cohen, says that after he was rear-ended the guilty party emerged from his vehicle still talking on the phone (127).
Readers can look up the author¡¦s last name in the alphabetized list of works cited.
Step 7 - Conclusion (one page only)
This section should be written separate from the body of research. Conclude your project in one or two paragraphs. Summarize and restate the ¡§main ideas¡¦¡¨ of your research. State whether or not your topic has had a negative or positive impact on society. Include a personal note to your conclusion by stating what you learned and your personal opinion.
Step 8- Works Cited
This section should be written separate from the body of research and conclusion. The works cited should include three sources and be written properly in alphabetical order. Please use the citationmachine.net website (MLA format).
Step 9 - Creating the Project
Create a project to represent your topic. Use a project board and display the report on the board.
You must:
„« Include a minimum of (5) different pictures representing the topic. Explain each picture underneath.
„« Make use of the entire board and make the board colorful.
„« Title must be posted on the project.
„« Create 3-D effect with objects on the board (optional)
„« Neatly use glue stick or staples to attach items to the board.
Step 10- The report must be typed, in 14 pitch, and double spaced. Make sure to have someone proof read your written report and make corrections before turning in your project.
Step 11 - Review the guidelines (1-10) and make corrections to your project. Have a parent or friend look at your project for mistakes.
Step 12 - Turn in your project before or on the due date. Project is due ____________________________
