Dear Parents/Families,
As the end of the year approaches, your fifth graders are showing some true signs of “middleschoolness”. In preparation for next year, the fifth grade team has set up a “Middle School Week” in which we will conduct our classroom much like the sixth grade classrooms students will encounter next year. As a class, we have brainstormed some guidelines and ideas of what a middle school student and class would look like. We will implement some of these ideas during the week of May 12th-16th. Some of these changes will include the following:
Students will be responsible for keeping track of homework. Homework will be written on the board but students will not be told to write it in their planners, and it will not be written on the classroom website. Students will have to be responsible for nightly assignments.
Seating arrangements: desks will be in rows. No supplies will be kept in their desks.
Homework will be given in every subject. This should be a larger load than usual but it will be good preparation for the quantity they will have next year.
Students will have 5 minutes between subjects to “go to their lockers”. Lockers will consist of their cubby and will contain all their books and materials. No snacks or drinks permitted during class, only during transitions.
Students will use Hall Passes to go to their locker, get water, go to the bathroom, etc.
Students will practice note-taking and middle school activities.
Each subject/class will be 40 minutes long. There will be a study hall the last 25 minutes of each day. Students may begin their homework during this time.
Students will have the opportunity to switch classes, and teachers, on Tuesday and Thursday to get the feel of changing rooms.
Students will receive points every time they call out, are not prepared with materials, leave something in their “locker”, or do not complete an assignment. Points will be assessed at the end of the week. Too many points in a day will result in an extra assignment to be completed the last 25 minutes of the day (prior to starting homework).
Thank you for your support in this endeavor. The students are excited and we are sure it will be an eye-opening experience for all!
Sincerely,
Erin Frazier
The Harcourt Math book is now available online. The
website is: www.eharcourtschool.com
Your child has his/her student id and password to
access this.
On the front page of your child's planner I have
recorded their Riverdeep Math/Reading username and
password. The website address is:

This website is great for reviewing the skills we are
learning in both math and reading. I will sometimes
assign lessons for your child to work on. We will
be utilizing this site from school, during our
computer lab time, and in the classroom. Please feel
free to use this learning tool at home, too!

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS: (For future SHMS students)
Dear Future Seahawks and Parents,
In spite of the letter you received from the county about your child’s school assignment, you do NOT need to come to the school or call us to “complete registration.” It’s all done.
We still don’t know anything about school times or number of periods for next year.
Buses will be assigned over the summer, and you’ll receive notice directly from the county, not from our school.
Fifth grade tours are May 7 & 8 at SHMS. The program will start at 10am with music. I will give brief welcome and Q&A, and then our Honor Students will take the children (and parents/teachers) on a tour of the building. We will conclude at 11:30. You do not have to RSVP to me.
Please, no gum, short shorts, sunglasses, nor hats inside the building.
COURSE VALIDATION LISTS:
IF (note the big if), IF I have the course requests input by May 7 & 8, I’ll give them out at the tour. If not, I’ll pony them to your child’s school later. This will be a list (not in order) of the courses and levels of courses that your child has been assigned for next year. I will update the course levels after I receive this year’s FCAT scores. You may not request certain teachers, different lunch period, or to have your child in a class with a certain friend.
May 20, 21, & 22 the SHMS Drama Club will present “Little Shop of Horrors” at 7:30pm in school cafeteria.
You can access the SHMS calendar at our school website: www.sh-ms.pinellas.k12.fl.us Click on calendar to see other info such as PTSA meetings, SAC, clubs, etc. For district calendar and news, go to www.pinellas.k12.fl.us Please try NOT to schedule family vacations, doctor/dentist appts. On testing days next year. You will receive specific dates on that later.
Stay tuned for important info on the SHMS Summer “Jump Start Math” program. The dates are June 9-10 and 11-12 (two 2-day sessions). Invitees will receive a letter. It is designed for high performing math students (Level 3 on last year’s FCAT & teachers’ recommendation for Advanced Math) to ensure that they are ready for middle school upper level math courses. It is by invitation only (no exceptions, no begging, no bribes please!), and invitations will be sent out in a few weeks. This is not for level 4 or 5 advanced math students nor for MEGSSS students.
ALSO: BIG NEWS
SHMS “SUMMER CAMP” ORIENTATION dates have been set for August 4 and 5. In-coming sixth graders will come on one of those days from 10am-2pm and go through a mini-day. There is a flyer attachment about that on this email. We’ll also sell locks, Planners, and t-shirts that day.
MOST IMPORTANT NEWS:
OPEN HOUSE for in-coming sixth graders will be Thursday, August 14, 5:30-7:00pm.
This is when sixth graders will receive their actual class schedules in the cafeteria, go with parents and meet their teachers, purchase the school Planner/Agenda, purchase the required school locks and be assigned a locker, add money to their cafeteria debit account, buy school t-shirts, AND parents can sign up to be volunteers, join PTSA, and more. The counselor (me) will be in the cafeteria at the Help Table in case of schedule problems. I usually wear a crazy hat, so you’ll know it’s me!
Please be sure to put August 14 on your calendar because this will eliminate a lot of anxiety and confusion on first day of school. (for parents and children! And me!)
HOT OFF THE PRESS!
SCHOOL HOURS FOR SHMS next year will be 9:00am-3:45pm for students! (Teachers hours will be 8:25am-3:50pm on most days)
There will be EIGHT PERIODS (not 6 like we currently have) and will run on an A-B schedule (every other day, 4 periods in most cases). Yes, there are a couple of exceptions, but more on that later.
We will be offering an extra period of electives, so I will give you information on that as soon as we iron out the details. In most cases I will simply add the students’ second choice elective from the form you filled out a couple of months ago. If we do offer new elective (like strings or art or conversational Spanish, for example), I’ll let you know before making class assignments.
Please encourage other fifth graders’ parents to sign up for my email announcements to ensure they get the latest news!
Sincerely,
Linda Sullivan
