October 2008 Newsletter:

What an exciting 25 days of school we have had. To date, we have learned “all”  of our single letter phonograms and we are starting our double phonograms. It is amazing how the phonograms work. A phonogram, by definition, is a letter or set of letters which represent a sound. In spelling, each sound in a word is represented by a phonogram. If we take the word past , for example, and we pronounce the word slowly  we hear the individual sounds; you will hear four different sounds: /p/ -  /a/ - /s/ - /t/. For each sound a phonogram is written down. If the student knows the phonogram and which sound it represents, spelling becomes much easier. After your child masters all the phonograms, don’t let them forget them! Quickly flip through the cards with him/her daily.

At the end of each school day, the children and I play a reading game whereas I put a word on the board and they have to read it back to me. I am amazed by some of the words the children can read and also spell. I am so proud!

We also celebrated mastering the single phonograms with an ice cream sundae party. As I have said at Open House, we love parties and I truly believe that if a child has something to work for, the job becomes theirs.

We celebrated Grandparent's Day this past month. We had a wonderful turnout and the children enjoyed making projects with the help of their grandparents. The Daily Breeze came into visit and some of our families pictures  were in the paper. For those Grandparents who could not attend, we made our projects for you and you remained in our hearts throughout the day.

Just a reminder ~ if you have any important information that needs to reach me, the planner is the best way. Immediately upon arrival, your child empties their backpack and the planner is handed to me so I can read any notes on the spot. Lunch money, absent notes, etc. should also be placed under the clip for safe keeping.

More to come with our Fall Celebration/Sock Hop and as always, thank you for entrusting me with the most precious gift of all, YOUR CHILD!

Much Affection~Mrs. Betz
