1.       CPU - Central Processing Unit . The brains of the computer on the ‘Mother Board’

2.       Parts of the Computer -Hard Drive, Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse & Peripheral Devices

3.       HARDWARE -The part of the computer that you can touch such as the hard drive, monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer & scanner.

4.       Peripheral Device -Anything that is connected to the CPU that works with the Computer : Printer, Plotter, Digital Camera, Musical Keyboard, Scanner

5.       LCD Panel - Flat panel monitor. It is a Liquid Crystal Display. The image is sharper and the monitor takes up less space.

6.       Software - The program - The series of commands that tell the computer what to do.

7.       Binary System- The language the computer speaks - it is a math language of “0’s” and “1’s” that is converted into English so that we can read the computer.

8.       Bit -Bit is a contraction of Binary digIT. Binary is base two, or a counting system where only ones and zeros are used. A bit is either a “0” or a “1”

9.       BYTE - Bytes are made up of eight bits. Memory is counted in term of BYTES. Every letter, number, punctuation point and space is composed  of 8 bits 
Example:
0= 00000000, 1= 00000001, 2= 00000010

10.   Memory - The information in the computer. It is measured in BYTES

11.   BYTE Units - Kilobyte - 1,000 bytes (KB), Megabyte - 1,000,000 bytes (MB),
Gigabyte - 1,000,000,000 bytes (GB), Terabyte - 1,000,000,000,000 bytes (TB)

12.   ROM - Read Only Memory - The permanent memory in the computer. You can not save in ROM

13.   RAM - Random-Access Memory - The memory the microprocessor can read and write to.  If you turn off the computer before you save it, it will be lost.   Go to - File/Save

14.   DRAM - Dynamic RAM. A type of semiconductor memory in which the information is stored as an electrical charge in a storage cell consisting of a capacitor and a transistor.

15.   DDR - Double Data Rate  - A RAM chip that transfers data ( information) at twice the rate of a SIMM or DIMM

16.   Google - A ‘1’ followed by 100 zeros. Today it refers to a company with endless amount of information that is posted on the web.

17.   Mother Board - A piece of fiberglass, usually dark green, where chips are soldered to copper tracers to make an electrical path.

18.   USB Ports - A smart port - When you plug in a USB ( Universal Serial Bus ) A peripheral bus standard developed by industry leaders, eliminating the need to install cards into dedicated computer slots and reconfigure the system.

19.   Jump Drive - The newest storage device. It plugs into the USB and you can drop and drag your files. Also called a thumb drive

20.   PDA - Personal Digital Assistant. Handheld device that combines computing, telephone/fax, and networking

21.   Multi Use Phones - Cell Phones that have multiple functions. You can make calls, text, pictures, surf the internet, listen to music and find directions.  Examples: iPhone, Instinct

22.   Sync - The talking of two electrical components to each other so that they match. Example: iPod and iTunes

23.   FILE - A storage place inside a program. When you have a program perform an operation you want to save the work, you save it in a file.

24.   Drives - There used to be 4 DRIVES ( places to store and retrieve information)
A Drive - 3 1/2” floppy (old technology)
B Drive - Zip Drive (old technology)
C Drive - The main drive in the computer.
D Drive - CD ROM/CDRW/DVD
E-Z Drives-Any other drive

25.   Folder - Taken from the business concept of a file folder that goes inside a file cabinet to hold documents, a place where you store your work in the hard drive.

26.   Desktop - When you turn on the computer this is what is on the monitor. The Icons are on the desktop in what ever order you arrange them.

27.   Icon - A picture that you see on the desktop that represents a program or a file.

28.   Recycle Bin - This Icon looks like a little trash bin. It is where you place a file or program that you no longer need. It will stay in the trash and use up memory until you empty the trash.

29.   Computer Format - There are 2 basic types of computers - PC & Macintosh. They can do many of the same operations, but it is like one does it in English and the other one does it in Spanish.

30.   PC - START - When you want to open a program you must go into the ‘START’ located in the lower left corner of the desktop.

31.   Mac - START - The Macintosh has a taskbar at the top of the screen. There is also an apple that has special functions, similar to the Start Menu in PC’s. Exception, most of the programs are either Icons or in the hard drive.

32.   Stepping into a program PC -  You have to go through an order and a series of folders to get into a program. Go to START and open the Menu bar. Go to Programs and open it. Go to the specific program then to FILE, NEW.

33.   Stepping into a program   MAC -  On the Desktop find the ICON of the program you wish to start and double click on it OR go into the Hard Drive and find the program and open it.

34.   Shutting Down - On all computers you need to do the reverse order of going into your programs. FILE -SAVE, FILE- EXIT, either START SHUT DOWN or SPECIAL - SHUT DOWN/ APPLE – SHUT DOWN. Otherwise you will crash the computer.

35.   Trouble Shooting - When something does not work on the computer the order that you check is the following: 1st - All cords, 2nd - electrical cords, 3rd restart the computer, 4th - call Mrs. Perretta

36.   Digital Camera - A picture taken with a camera that saves to a floppy disk. It is saved as bytes and can be manipulated by the computer, depending on the software that you are using.

37.   Router - A device that forwards data packages along networks. A router is connected to at least two networks.

38.   Network - Where two or more computers are linked together, usually by phone lines but can be just by cables. These computers can share information and programs.

39.   Server - When computers are networked the main computer connected to the phone line is called the server. The only function of that computer is to access the Internet .

40.   LAN - Local Area Network. High-speed data network that covers a relatively small geographic area.     

41.   Bluetooth - A Wireless LAN specification that describes how mobile phones, computers, and PDAs can interconnect with each other and with other devices

42.   Protocol - The common "language" between two computers when "talking" to one another. A protocol is a set of rules that define how a communications (sub) function is carried out. A protocol is independent of the computer hardware and operating system on which it runs.

43.   Phishing - The act of sending an e-mail to a user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user to surrendering private information.

44.   Podcast - A digital media file that is distributed over the internet  using syndication feeds (other web sites) for playback on iPods or other similar devices.

45.   ISP - Internet Service Provider : A direct connection to the internet.

46.   Search Engine - The computer program that helps you locate information on the internet. Example: Google

47.   WWW - World Wide Web - Part of the Web Address  to tell the computers where to look for your information.

48.   Internet Home Page - When you log on to your server the home page will be the first page you see. You do not have to stay there to start your search.

49.   Link symbol - When browsing the internet the curser changes into a pointing hand when you are on a LINK site.

50.   Bookmark -   When you find a web site that you want to go back to, rather than remember the address you can click on the bookmark and it will be saved for future reference. Another word – FAVORITE

51.   E-Mail - Electronic Mail - This is a system in which you send a message to someone with out talking or licking a stamp. The distance can be half way around the world or 10 feet.

52.   Sending an E-mail - Besides the address the E-mail message should contain a SUBJECT so that the receiver knows what the message is about.

53.   @ symbol - The @ symbol is part of the address in an E-mail account. NoraCP@leeschools.net

54.   Cc: - Carbon Copy - Meaning to send the exact same message to a third party with out rewriting the message.

55.   IM - Instant Message - When you are connected by the Internet you can write messages back and forth in real time.

56.   Texting - Instant messaging that people do on a cell phone.

57.   Video Conferencing - With the use of a Quick Cam while on the Internet you can see the other person and they can see you. It is the same as a telephone conversation over the Internet.

58.   VGA - Video Graphics Array. A display standard in the PC environment in which 640 x 480 pixels and 16 out of 256 colors can be displayed at the same time.

59.   Pixel - The monitor screen is broken up into dots. The dots are called pixels. The color of the background ,words and the picture will depend on the color of the dot.

60.   Download - While on the internet you can get a software program from a server thousands of miles away to put on your hard drive. Some times it is free sometimes you have to pay for it.

61.   Freeware - The term freeware has no clear accepted definition, but it is commonly used for packages, which permit redistribution (sharing) but not modification.

62.   Public Domain - Art work  and music that is free to use for the public. All other art work and music you have to pay a royalty to the owner.

63.   CD ROM - Compact Disk Read Only Memory - A disk that is used to read stored information. It holds the same amount of information as on 750 floppies.

64.   CD-R - With a special drive you can store information or programs on a CD. A floppy stores 1.4 MB a CD stores 700MB.Once it is saved you cannot change it.

65.   CD-RW -  Like the CD-R with a special drive you can save information on a CD - EXCEPT with this program you can also ERASE and use the CD again.

66.   DVD-R/RW - A Disk drive that you can watch a Digital Video Device on your computer and you can save a video that you made or want to copy.

67.   Blu-ray - A high density optical disk format that offers more than 5 times the storage capacity of a standard DVD. It can store 25 gigabytes (GB) of information. A standard DVD can store 4.7 GB. A dual layer Blu-ray Disc can store 50 GB           

68.   Multimedia - A computer with sound, CD-ROM drive and enough Graphic sizzle to play television-like videos on the screen

69.   Web TV - A TV set as a  computer monitor to use the internet to make the TV interactive without buying a computer. You need a cable service rather than a modem.

70.   Extensions - Part of a document identification. It explains what kind of file you are looking at. The file will have a name (either default or specified) followed by a dot (.) and then a combinations of letters. Example: .tif, .pic, .doc, .jpeg, .mp3,.wav,.txt,etc.

71.   TIF - A Graphic Extension that identifies the type of file. TAGGED IMAGE FILE is a paint-type file.

72.   PIC - A Graphic Extension that identifies the type of file. PICTURE is a draw-type file.

73.   JPEG - Graphic file used on the World Wide Web called JOINT PHOTOGRAPHERS EXPERT GROUP. Because of the name it is used for files with photographs.

74.   GIF - Graphic file used on the World Wide Web called GRAPHICS INTERCHANGE FORMAT. Because of the name it is used for files with line drawings.

75.   WAV - A .WAV file is an Audio File that will record sound on your computer. You must have a sound card in your computer to translate it.

76.   MP3 - A .MP3 ( Motion Picture expert group, audio layer 3) file is a high quality compressed  audio file.
