Welcome to my 8th Grade Intensive Reading Web Page!
We are working hard for students to get on/near grade level in reading. One important way to accomplish this is for students to be reading at home. It is also important for each student be in class every day unless they are sick. Being attentive & participating in class is crucial. We cover a great deal of material in the 90 minute lessons; it is very difficult for absent students to catch up on what they have missed since most of it is interactive direct instruction.
Did you know that on computer lab days my students are developing their vocabulary at freerice.com? At this site, they not only work on vocabulary at their level, they also donate 20 grains of rice to 3rd world countries for each correct answer. Ask your son/daughter about the total of rice they have donated! What a great way to help themselves & others!
Students have SPELLING tests for each unit of study. A spelling study sheet should be found in your son/daughter's READING HOMEWORK FOLDER. I have included the spelling words in the flash cards below. Some units are more difficult than others. The best way to use these flashcards is for someone to read the word and then the reading student can write the word or spell it out loud. Hope you use the flashcards. You can click on them in the box above.
OTHER SKILLS are also included in the flash cards for review.
The information below was left on the webpage for those visiting for the first time...or as a review for families.

GRADING for READING CLASS:
60% of grade = assessments, quizzes, project
20% of grade = classwork assignments
20% of grade = homework assignments
HOMEWORK: To begin the school year, our HOMEWORK will be a class novel (provided by me ) that is read at home by each student. Pages or chapters will be assigned Monday – Friday. Recommended pages/chapters will be written in the students' planners each day Monday-Friday. It is a guide as to where students should be to finish the book on time. This plan allows for students to develop a life skill of managing their time. If they are busy on a particular evening, they can read more on another day or over the weekend. They can pick their reading schedule. However, there will be a DEADLINE established for the CLASS NOVEL. This will be announced in class. Students are expected to complete the book & take an AR Test or teacher made test by the DEADLINE date. The deadline date should be written in each student's planner. Students that have difficulty completing the book or passing the test may be required to maintain a daily log for the next class novel assigned. Encourage your 8th grader to discuss the book with you. I hope this homework approach will develop a life skill of time management & being responsible for their work.
