Reaching Beyond the Stars!

Our First Grade Vision:  Be the Best that You Can Be!

Our First Grade Class Mission is to focus, listen, follow directions, work hard, and believe in ourselves so that we can learn!

Fantastic Job on the Stanford 10!!!!

AR update:  Way to go readers!  So many students are reading chapter books and doing very well with their AR comprehension tests!  Fantastic reading!  We are close to meeting our class goal!  Keep reading!

Hey students...How is your AR going?  We now have more than 10!!! students who have earned an AR bracelet for earning over 50 points this year!  Can you make it to 50 points?  I know you can!  Keep reading and review your AR record carefully to keep track of individual progress!  I can print you an AR record at any time...just ask!

AR records can be sent home at any time!  Just let me know!  Be sure to check out the average percent correct on the AR report to be sure it is 85% or above! Remember to read your books twice and ask yourself questions about the book so you will be sure to gain comprehension and understand the book!

Did you know the best way to increase words read per minute is just to practice?  Please be sure your child is practicing reading daily!

Hey Parents...We would love to have you come to visit our classroom and read a story to the class!  If you are interested, please send a note, and we'll set up a time!!

Math News!

Please ask your child if he/she tries to take a Math Facts test at school daily and encourage this practice.  Some students are not practicing daily. Remember, many websites such as the ones listed at the bottom of this page are helpful. Flash cards for specific levels are available anytime through me. Please have your child ask for the level he or she needs! Remember...our goal is 40 problems in 2 minutes!

**Have you increased your level in the last week?  Ask yourself what you can do to improve your speed.  Are you practicing?  I will be happy to give you a new set of flashcards for your level.  Just ask!

Reading Class Homework Week of April27th

Spelling and Vocabulary words are listed in the FLASHCARDS section at the top of this webpage!!  Try them!!

Story :  Blue Jay Finds a Way

Monday:  Write six sentences using six spelling words.  Circle the nouns you use in your sentences.  Did you try to use adjectives to describe your nouns?

Tuesday:  Read your little book and answer story questions in complete sentences.  Read your vocabulary words with an adult.

Wednesday:  Read an AR book.  Write a paragraph telling about the book.  Review your spelling words.  (Remember:  Spellingcity.com)

Thursday:  Please write spelling words 1 through 10 in alphabetical order. Practice all spelling words with an adult.

Social Studies and Research Update!!

We enjoyed researching insects  and plants and reading non-fiction books.  We are writing great reports on our insects and look forward to sharing them with you! We have also planted lima bean seeds and grass seeds!

**Now we are beginning to study the United States.  All students will be researching and writing a report on a state of their choice.

Creative Writing!!!  One of my favorites... students have completed the prewriting for their own stories using animal characters.  We have planned the stories and are now ready to use the prewriting to begin writing the actual story.  We can not wait to complete stories and publish them on the computer!

Hey Parents...Did you know we are saving a bunch of our writing at school so we can bring home a writing portfolio at the end of the year?  This way, you will be able to see many of our writing activities and view our progress!
