Course Overview

Grading:

Novel Projects 35%

Research Skills 15%

Text Activities 25%

Vocabulary 15%

Text :  Scholastic Reading XL   

Novels: 2 novels will be read per quarter, 1 in class and the other outside.  Everyone will read the same book in class but the second is reader’s choice, but must first have it approved by the teacher.  There will be a project associated with each novel.

            Individual projects:

Students may choose any of the following projects to do on their book of choice but may only do each project once per year.

·        Power point

·        Write a play

·        Create a children’s book version of novel

·        Create a video of novel

·        Analysis papers

o       Analyze a specific character

o       Break novel down to explore morals/hidden meanings/metaphors

o       Compare it to the movie version of the novel(if applicable)

In-class Novel Projects:

·        Design a book cover with summary on back cover

·        Editorial critique

·        Compare to movie version (if applicable)

·        American Title (book talk)

Research Skills:

  • Library research

  • Bibliographies

  • Outlining

  • Quality Internet research

Vocabulary:

  • Words from novels

  • Newspaper vocabulary

  • Vocabulary activity quizzes

Library:

  • Each week we will spend the period in the library reading our individual novels.

Novel Project Criteria

Power Point:

  • Minimum 10 slides long

  • Must include pictures/images

  • Detailed description or summary of the book

  • You will be graded on organization, creativity, grammar, and information

Plays:

  • Script

    • Must be at least 4 typed pages long (not including title page)

    • Title page

    • 12 point font

    • At least 3 main characters

    • You will be graded on organization, creativity, grammar, and information

  • Video of book

    • Must be at least 5-10 minutes long

    • Costumes and scenery

    • You will be graded on organization, creativity, grammar, and information

Children’s book

·        Minimum of 10 pages long with descriptions and illustrations

·        Cover/binding

  • You will be graded on organization, creativity, grammar, and information

Papers

Character Analysis

·        Must be 2 typed pages long

·        12 point font

·        Explore a specific character from your novel (doesn’t  have to be the main character)

·        Write a description of this character going beyond the surface

·        Why did he/she do specific things in the novel

·        How did this character affect the outcome/storyline of this novel

Hidden Meanings

·        Must be 2 typed pages long

·        12 point font

·        Did your novel have hidden meanings?

·        Did certain events or characters represent things that the ordinary reader would not pick up on

·        What were the morals/values/lessons that you discovered in your novel

Movie/Book Comparison

·        Must be 2 typed pages long

·        12 point font

·        Watch the movie version of your novel and compare it to the book

·        How are they different?

·        Which do you prefer and why?
