Students in 9B and 9A worked on a content quiz in class regarding the short story, "Unreasonable Doubt", and those who did not finish in class are to complete this for homework this evening.

Monday, January 5, 2009

Welcome back and Happy New Year.  Because of Christmas activities and weather, we fell a bit behind our schedule so today we began a short story called, Unreasonable Doubt, and tomorrow we begin a content quiz that goes along with it. Students were reminded that final term exams are at the end of the month, and they should begin preparing for these sooner than later.

Monday, December 14,

Students have completed work on a "Black Cat" Quiz, and have begun the vocabulary for the new story, "Unreasonable Doubt."  There should be a content quiz on this story beginning Wednesday and finishing up on Thursday.  Any student who has work still incomplete has been notified and given until the end of the week to get everything passed in.  After Friday, it shall be marked as a 0%

Thursday, December 4

Students have begun work on the Vocabulary Development sheet and a few have started the Content Quiz with "The Black Cat."  It has been a difficult and tragic week for many so the work load has been eased a bit for the time being.

Thursday, November 27

Student have completed two assignments this week regarding the story, "The Lottery" and have also worked on vocabulary for the Edgar Allan Poe short story, "The Black Cat."  There will be both a vocabulary development assignment and a "The Black Cat" Content Quiz next week.

Thursday, November 20

Students have an assignment based on the short story, "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson.  It is due on Monday, Movember 24.  As well, any students who have not yet passed in their assignment concerning Superstitions and Symbolism must do so by Monday.

Friday, November 14

Students have completed both the Spelling and Vocabulary Tests for Unit One.  They have an assignment due on Monday regarding Superstitions and Symbols.  A number of students have already completed these and passed them in to me.  Most have found the Internet almost a necessity for finding the information and printing off the necessary symbols.

Thursday, November 6

We are still working on short stories.  A few students are finishing up some late assignments, but most are up to date with everything so far.  We have completed the notes, questions, vocabulary, and stories for Unit 1 and have just begun Unit 2 - Superstition and Symbolism.  Students will be having a Unit 1 Test on Wednesday, November 12, and Thursday, November 13.  A general reminder that all grade nine students have a Math midterm on Friday, November 14.

Wednesday, November 5

Grade 9 Take our Kids to Work Day.

Wednesday, October 29

Students in 9A and 9C wrote their spelling test and finished up their Vocabulary Tests from yesterday.  Students in 9B finished their vocabulary tests and still have to write their spelling tests tomorrow.

Monday, October 27

Students have a busy week of material to cover.  On Tuesday, they have a Unit 1 Vocabulary Test, and on Wednesday, they have a Unit 1 Spelling Test.  Remembrance Day projects are due on Tuesday of this week.

Tuesday, October 21

Students have completed their assignments for the short story, "The Most Dangerous Game" and have taken two classes to work on Remembrance Day projects which may include a poster, a poem or and essay.  Students are also reminded to prepare for a vocabulary test on Tuesday, October 28 and a spelling test on Wednesday, October 29. They received the list of words on Monday of this week

Friday, October 17

Students passed in their quiz and received an assignment to work on for Monday.

Thursday, October 16

Any student who has not completed the quiz for "The Most Dangerous Game" is to have it finished for tomorrow morning.  It will be collected and graded.

Wednesday, October 15

Students continue to work on The MD Game quiz.

Tuesday, October 14

Began working on the assignment for "The Most Dangerous Game."  This will take approximately 2 days and those who have not completed it will be required to finish it at home.

Thursday, October 9

Students completed vocabulary work for "The Most Dangerous Game" and began reading the text.  We will finish the story tomorrow and begin work on an Assignment Monday in class.

Tuesday, October 7

In preparation for our next story, "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell, I introduced a discussion biography of Charles Darwin.  The concept of survival of the fittest plays a major role in the story and Darwin's thoughts of adaptation tie in nicely with this.

Monday, October 6

Today we discussed the questions for the short story, "The Necklace."  Although these were not used as a homework check, students understand that I will be collecting their scribblers soon, and that the work must be completed and organized when the scribblers are passed in.

Wednesday, October 1

Most students finished the Content Quiz, but for those who did not, it is to be completed for homework.

Tuesday, September 30

Students began working on a Content Quiz that asks questions about the first two literary selections we have worked on.  They have two classes to work on this and then it will be sent home on Wednesday to be completed and passed in on Thursday, hopefully in time to be corrected before Parent Teacher interviews Thursday evening.

Monday, September 29,

Students passed in a homework assignment from Thursday, a short context quiz, and began working on the next story, "The Necklace," by Guy de Maupassant.

Tuesday, September 22,

9C students finished reading a story called "Through the Tunnel" and were given questions to work on in class. Those who did not complete the questions were asked to do so for homework.
9A and 9B students read the story today and will begin the questions tomorrow.

Thursday, September 18

Those students who did poorly in the recent literary terms test have been given the option of a rewrite on Monday, September 22.  Hopefully they will take advantage of this opportunity to get a better mark.  To be fair, the marks from the first test and the second test will be averaged together to get a combined percentage.  Anyone who opts to take the test and receives a lower mark will only have the first mark count.  Really, as I've explained to the students, its a no-lose situation, and I hope they will use it to their advantage.

Tuesday, September 16

Students completed the Literary Terms test on Monday and results were not as positive as hoped.  While some did extremely well, there were quite a few that did not pass. As a result we may be looking towards a rewrite sooner or later.  In class we have begun our first unit dealing with Adventure Fiction.  The process is one of notes, discussion, vocabulary development, and reading.

WELCOME BACK,

Thursday, September 10 - This is the first entry for the new school year.  Sorry for any delays, but really there has not been that much to talk about yet.  The Grade 9 English classes have been reviewing literary terms in a effort to create and maintain a general vocabulary we will be using in class. We are just about finished with this and we will be having a test on Monday, September 15.  Students are encouraged to study a few terms each evening so it does not pile up Sunday night.

Monday, March 11

Ms. Clinton began her teaching block with 9B and the novel study.  Her first project involved a process called "Quick Write" in which students select one of three open-ended questions and write a response.  The class went well and the students were very cooperative and willing to do the work required.
