Summer is ALMOST here - but you wouldn't know that by the weather we are having!

Thank goodness it all cleared in time for our FABULOUS Pool party at the Kaplan's.  THANK YOU KAPLANS!!!!!

A few items of business:

As we will be cleaning out our school supplies over the next two days, I suggest and encourage students NOT to ride bikes.  Their hands will be very full as they will be taking home ART projects and supply 'buckets' Wed. and Thurs.

I would like to have the room pretty empty by Friday. In fact, tomorrow is "moving day" here at HW.  There are about 10 teachers moving rooms for next year, so we are all collaborating together to help make the move as successful as possible.  I will be moving to Room 22 - the room that Mrs. Zifkin is currently in.

Don't forget Friday is 11:00 dismissal.

Finally, I want to inform you all that if it rains tomorrow, Blam-ball will be rescheduled to Thursday and the "Families" picnic will be cancelled. We will still have our Yearbook signing.

If there are any questions you all have, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thanks,
Joanna

Hello Folks,
Hope you are all enjoying your Saturday.

I wanted to just touch base with you all about any concerns you might be having about the animal report.

It is my understanding that some people are having a hard time on noodletools.com

Here's what I suggest:  Go onto noodletools and start a new account - choose the free option (it is especially designed for 1st - 5th grades).

Noodletools will give you a printable version that is perfect for turning in with the report.

If you know of another bibliography source to use, that is also acceptable.

Don't forget - BOTH the written report and the final presentation are due on Monday, June 1st.

I'll be checking email through the week, so feel free to throw any questions my way.

Finally, you have probably seen the note come home about Ms. Dauten.  Yesterday was her last day of "take over".  She will still be with us through Friday, June 5th.  We will have an in-class party to send her off.  She will be in the building through the rest of the year, but probably observing at different grades.  Please be sure to send in your page and $2.00 by Wed. June 3rd.

We are in the home stretch!  Lots of fun things planned for these next two weeks.  Emotions might be high, but we will be keeping it all POSITIVE!

Have a great weekend.

Joanna

UPCOMING EVENTS:
Mon. June 1 - Animal Reports Due
Wed. June 3 - Field Day
Fri. June 5 - Farewell Ms. Dauten
Tues. June 9 - End of Year Class Party
Wed. June 10 - Blamball, Families Picnic, Yearbooks
Fri. June 12 - Last Day - Dismissal at 11:00am

Hello Room 11 Parents:

I hope you all had a good holiday weekend.

There have been some questions about the placement process and the upcoming Potluck lunch that I would like to clarify.

First, I just want to let you all know that we are still working the placements out, but we are moving ahead by reading the Student Profiles very carefully.

Our intent, at this moment, is to meet all the requests for looping. We will know better when the 3rd grade teachers meet again this week to review placements.

As for the Potluck Party on Wednesday (tomorrow) - the kids chose to celebrate their "Compliment Party" by way of a lunch together where each child contributes.  They decided that each child should bring in a favorite family recipe to share.

The food can be brought in first thing in the morning and I can heat it up if necessary, or you could drop it off at 11:30.  You do not need to stay during this time, but you are welcome to hang out a bit if you like.

The final homework pack is coming home this week.  It is simplified so more energy can be spent on the Animal Report.  40 facts are due on Friday of this week, but the writing should be underway.

Written Reports AND Final Presentations are due next Monday, June 1st. We will randomly select the order of presentations, but all need to come in on Monday, as to be ready if called upon.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Thanks,
Joanna Amaral

Dear Parents,

I am excited to have begun my takeover this week. During my takeover, I have assumed full teaching responsibilities in the classroom. Although it is shortened, this has been a great week.

The students have been exploring the concept of similes and metaphors through creating imaginary creatures and using both similes and metaphors to provide a description of both their physical and personality traits.

In math, I introduced the concept of factor trees and the students worked on a factor tree activity.

As we move into next week the class will be reading the novel Sarah, Plain and Tall and we will discuss life on the prairie.

The students will also be adding the Anole Lizards into their terrariums, which should make for some interesting observations in science.

I am really enjoying my time in Room 11 — it is truly a great class!

I hope that you have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Jenna Dauten

Happy Friday - what a beautiful day!

Camp Edwards was a blast! - I cannot wait to go up again next year with this group of kids!

It's been a busy week around Hubbard Woods.  There is a great deal of communication going on about next year.  It's been good to hear from so many of you.

I am still needing to hear from some of you on 2 accounts: preference regarding next year & time slots for conferencing.

NEXT YEAR PREFERENCE - Wed. May 13 is the due date for the Student Placement Profiles.

CONFERENCES - As for conference time slots, I'd love to hear from you, if I have not heard so yet, ASAP, so I can work on that schedule over the weekend.

Ms. Dauten is beginning her 'take over' period.  During this time I will be able to work on some individual, end of year assessments and the 'end of year' Checklists.

Have a wonderful weekend - especially all you MOMS!

Warmly,

Joanna Amaral

Hello Again Room 11:

So many things going on this week!  I wanted to alert you that conferences are coming up.

Whereas I will be mailing home an 'End of Year Summative Checklist" at the end of the year, I also offer a conference, if you so choose.

This 20 minute conference is considered summative.  It reflects on the year as a whole, and will help to wrap up the year. This conference is optional.  Or, if you prefer, we could do a short phone check in, or take a pass altogether.  Please let me know your preference.

If you wish to conference, please refer to the time slots below.  Please list 3 DIFFERENT choices  that would work for you.  Hopefully I will be able to piece it all together.

Thanks for all the good communication!

Hello again Room 11 -

I know there is lots of "BUZZING" going on out there.

I'm sure you are all being very thoughtful about the possible scenarios about next year.

I just want to reiterate that I am very open to discussing this with you.  I know there are many factors and it can be difficult.  I want encourage open and honest communication. I totally respect your wishes and want to support you in any way.

FYI - I will not be here on Thursday and Friday, as I will be heading up to Camp Edwards with this year's 4th grade.  (Let the mentoring begin!)

Feel free to email me or contact me (outside of those days).

The student profile form is due May 13th.  I would love to hear from you all by then.

Warmly,
Joanna Amaral

Monday, May 4, 2009
Dear Room 11,

I have exciting and interesting news to share with you all. If you have read your ITEM by now, then you have already discovered that I will be moving to 4th grade for the 2009 – 2010 school year. Each year brings new changes to the needed configurations for each grade level.  I am very excited to be a part of this change.

At this point, I am hoping to hear from each of you regarding your preference for your child’s placement into 4th grade.  Here are the options to consider:

1.You can request that your child continue to be with me for 4th grade (looping).

2.You can leave the door open for any 4th grade classroom (including mine).
3.You could request a brand new placement (guilt free, I promise!)

As with all of our placement discussions, we will take into account your preference, but will need to weigh it along with other factors in the placement process.  Our efforts are focused on creating well-balanced, heterogeneous classes.

Looping (also known as “Teacher-Student Progression” and “Multiyear Groupings”) has been a placement option at Hubbard Woods for many years.  As with all classroom configurations, there are pros and cons.  I have listed some of these below for your consideration:

Pros
- parent-student-teacher relationships flourish
- cuts down on time needed for the annual back-to-school
  ritual
- helps teachers make critical decisions about children at
  the beginning of the year
- research indicates that looping increases effective
  engaged learning time for students
- children often benefit from working with the same peer
group for an extended period of time.

Cons
- the loop is rarely pure (some parents may opt for their
   child not to loop)
- can be difficult for child who is not going on with the
  class
- occasionally, by the end of the second year relationships
  may get stale
- student(s) new to group may have a difficult time feeling
accepted into the group (our experience is the opposite:
  newcomers are treated like celebrities!)
- hard to say goodbye after two years

Since I am waiting to hear from you, it has not been determined if my class will be a full or a partial loop.  I believe that many factors need to be weighed.

Please know that the following will be considered:

1) parents’ wishes;
2) social and academic needs of our current classroom;
3) the needs of the entire grade level.

We will collect and evaluate this information for the placement process.

Using the “Parent Placement Reflection Form” in the recent ITEM, please share your thoughts and opinions about your child’s educational experience for next year.  If you would like to speak with me as you consider your decision, please feel free to contact me.

In the end, no matter the choices, please be assured that it has been a pleasure to work with each and every child.  I would consider it an honor to have the opportunity to teach him/her another year.  I also honor and respect your decision if you feel otherwise.

Sincerely,

Joanna Amaral

(A hard copy of this letter is also coming home today.)

REMINDER:

Animal Report cover sheets are due tomorrow!

(yellow - with parent signature)  Keep the rest of the packet for your own reference and guidance.

Thanks,
Joanna Amaral

Tuesday, April 29, 2009

Hello all:

So good to see so many of you all at the barn dance!  What fun we had!  It was a very special Pioneer Week!

OK, so - from Pioneers to Animals - Here we go!!!!

I have sent home a big yellow packet about the ANIMAL REPORTS today.  After being 'blown away' with their book reports, I can't wait to see these projects!

Please go through the packet with your child.  Sign and return the bottom portion by Friday, May 1st.

If your child has chosen a very specific animal, please discuss this with him/her, as resources may be difficult to come by.  You may wish to head over to the public library to see what is available.

Changes are acceptable up until Friday, but I have asked that children do not double up on an animal or species, so they have to check to see if another child has already selected that one.

Finally, the "checklist" page toward the end of the packet had some incorrect numbers.  I will be sending home a new one.

Thanks again for all your support.

Joanna Amaral

Howdy Folks!
Happy Pioneer Week!

Here's a final review of what to expect this week:

It’s time to forget about 2009 and slip back into the 1800’s as we travel west with the Peachblossom, Brown and Radwin families. This is a wonderful day, which promises to give us all many memories.

On your child’s day, we will meet at Crow Island School at 9:00 am and will be finished at 2:30 pm.  (Mrs. Kuzel has the list, so she knows who will be where.)

Your child will need to wear appropriate coats (bring rain/winter gear if it looks like rain/cold on your day).  Everyone must have boots for hunting (no matter what the weather—also, don’t forget your shoes for inside – try to choose good Pioneer shoes).

We will provide the clothing to be worn for the day. Girls:  you may wish to put your hair up in a special way – We will have dresses, aprons and bonnets for you there.  Boys:  you will need to wear pants that would be appropriate for the times – perhaps some khakis or just blue jeans.

Yes, lunch will be provided, in fact, it will be cooked by your own child!  Make sure he/she has had a hearty breakfast, as we will be jumping right into our daily chores!

You will need to make arrangements to bring your child to Crow Island School no earlier than 9:00 am and pick up no later than 2:30 pm.  When you come to get your child at 2:30, please find a parking place and wait upstairs in the lobby.  We will come get you to join us (at that point you will get a mini tour by your child).

I recognize coordinating these new times may be difficult, so I have included the names of the other children in your group if you need to hook up with someone.

Go to bed early and be healthy.  Meet us in the front hall of Crow Island wearing a big smile.

Remember...you are a Pioneer at all times.  We will work very hard and have lots of fun!

See you out West,

Mrs. A (AKA “Grandma”, “Ma”, & “Aunt”)

Friday April 3rd , 2009

Welcome back – spring is here!

Let me take this moment to remind you all of my recess coat/sleeve rule:  below 50 degrees – a coat is a MUST.  50 – 60 degrees is the “long-sleeve rule” (This can be a shirt, or fleece – a coat may be too warm.)  above 60 degrees anything goes – well, except, you know. . . .  Hopefully this will help us stay healthy and making good choices for our bodies.

This week we welcome Ms. Dauten full time as our student teacher.  She will slowly be taking over some subjects to eventually have a full two weeks of full class control.  She has already proven herself to be very capable and enthusiastic.  We are all thrilled to have her with us.

We had a great trip to the Grove – it served well as a great introduction to our Pioneer Unit.

The 2nd Book Reports came in today.  Boy, am I impressed!  Hopefully we will have time get through them all.

Next week, Wed. April 8th, we will be heading over to Crow Island School for a special treat.  Ruby Bridges is coming to speak with all the 3rd & 4th Graders in the district.  A permission slip is coming home with your child – please be sure to get it back to me ASAP.

Also, please remember that next week is only a 4 day week.

Sincerely,
Joanna Amaral

Upcoming Events:
Friday, April 10 – No School – Good Friday
Friday, April 17 – BIG Book Report #3 due
April 21, 22 & 23 – Pioneer Room (each student to go for one full day)

****************************************************

REMINDER:

Tomorrow - Monday March 30
Field Trip to the Grove.

Have children dress in an old fashioned way & bring a sac lunch.

Hope you all have had a good break!

See you soon.
Joanna

Friday March 20, 2009

Ooops - I misprinted the book report date - it is April 3rd!

The kids did a great job on their book reports – I cannot wait to see the 2nd batch due April 3rd.

This week, Ms. Dauten hung out with us.  She will begin as our full time student teacher after break.

Don’t forget – Monday is our field trip to the Grove.

Please remember: Part of our day there will be spent in an old-fashioned, one room schoolhouse.  To make the experience more authentic, please have your son or daughter dress in an old-fashioned way for the day.  A girl may wear Mom’s skirt and a blouse if she likes, or a pioneer dress if she has one.  Bonnets and aprons are also a nice touch.  A boy might wear his jeans or pants rolled up to the knees like “knickers” and a button down shirt.  He could wear Dad’s socks to the knee.  A bow tie or suspenders might be a good addition, if he likes.

Also – pack a lunch in a ‘throw away’ sac.

Wishing you all a very relaxing and refreshing spring vacation.

Sincerely,
Joanna Amaral

Upcoming Events:
March 23 – 27 Spring Vacation
Monday, March 30 – Field Trip to the Grove
Friday, April 3 – Book Report #2 due
Friday, April 10 – No School – Good Friday
Friday, April 17 – BIG Book Report #3 due
April 21, 22 & 23 – Pioneer Room (each student to go for one full day)
**************************************
I need your help:

If you have a conflict with Pioneer Room Dates of April 21, 22 or 23 - please email me ASAP

I know some of you have indicated this to me before, but I have lost track of those notes and need you to re-inform me.

Thanks so much,
Joanna

Dear Parents:

It’s been a full week with the ISATs, but the kids have done a wonderful job giving it their all.  Even in the final tests, they stuck with it and had good attitudes.

Outside of the ISAT’s we were able to begin a new unit in science.  We will be exploring variables through the use of a system called the “Whirly bird”.  Through this study we will be discussing a great deal of cause and effect.

We have had time to read our class novel: A Lion to Guard Us – a story about children making it to America during colonial times. and we have continued our work with multiplication tables.

Friday afternoon we celebrated with Games Galore.  Thanks to Andrea Eskandari we also had a blast with a very clever scavenger hunt.  It was good to just hang loose after such a regimented week.  The kids certainly deserved it!

Some folks still need to turn in the Book Report Bonanza form.  Please be sure to do so on Monday.

Our normal routine will resume on Monday.  Be sure to check in on the Monday homework pack for the directions for Book Report #1 – due Monday, March 16th.

Sincerely,
Joanna Amaral

Upcoming Events:
Monday, March 16 – Book Report #1 due
Tuesday, March 17 – Ms. Dauten joins us

Friday, February 27, 2009

Well, well, it seems that winter still has us in a hold.  Despite the desire for green, flowers and birds, the kids have had a great week.  We have gotten a great deal accomplished with preparations for the ISATs.

ISAT Samples
We have run samples this week.  You will see an orange folder coming home with this.  Please take some time to look through it, so you too know what the ISAT expectations are.  I’ve included some math vocabulary and rubrics as well.

Where I DO NOT teach “to the test” - I do believe in teaching the kids HOW to test.  This is their first experience with formal testing.  I believe it is important to teach the kids to be as successful as possible, so they can “show what they know” and not freeze up or get caught in the tricks or any confusion of directions.  Hopefully the time we spent this week will serve them well for this year’s testing as well as many years to come.

ISAT Week
Next week we will have no spelling or “Worktime” work.  The homework pack coming home will be minimal and fun.  I hope that this will help the children to put their energies into the right place.  This teaches them the importance of channeling efforts and gives a positive feel to these efforts.

Please be sure to be ON TIME and prompt daily next week.  Testing will begin at 8:45 each morning.  Assist your child in getting a good night’s sleep and healthy meals.

Our schedule is as follows:
Monday - C day - 3/2
8:45am Math I
12:30pm Reading III (w/ written response)

Tuesday - D day - 3/3
8:45am Reading I
12:30pm Math III (extended response)

Wednesday - E day - 3/4
12:30pm - Writing

Thursday - F day - 3/5
8:45 - Reading II (w/ written response)

Friday - A day - 3/6
8:45 - Math II

Thanks to all who will be providing the “FUN” snacks prior to the tests.  Any illnesses/absences will be made up the following week.

BOOK  REPORT BONANZA
Coming home today is the Information on the Book Report Bonanza.  Please take time to read this through with your child, as I will need to have the plan sheet returned one week from today.  I have gone over it in class, but it is still a bit tricky.

Announcements:
We are having an attendance crack down here at Hubbard Woods. (Not due to ISATs – just in general).  I am to register the attendance no later than 8:45 am and 12:35pm.  Please be prompt or your child will be marked tardy.

We are having our field trip to the GROVE on that 1st Monday when we return from Spring Break.  Please let me know if your travel plans exceed the vacation dates.

Finally, I wanted to let you know that beginning March 17, we will have a student teacher with us.  Ms. Jenna Dauten is from National Louis University (NLU – my alma mater).  She will be with us through the end of the year.  More information to come as we get to know her better.

Have a good weekend.

Sincerely,
Joanna Amaral

Friday, February 20 , 2009

Happy Friday, Room 11:

Conferences are done and it's time to party! Perhaps I will see some of you tonight at the Parent/Faculty party.  It was great to meet with your all during conferences.

Here are some updates from the classroom:

Dr. Day
Today we had a very special visit from Dr. Eskandari (Owen’s Dad) who is a vascular surgeon.  He spent time with us today teaching us about the systems in the human body and then shared more specifically about the work he does.  Needless to say it was fascinating!  Thank you for coming!

ISAT news
As you all know, ISATs are just around the corner.  I have begun to have some discussions and preparation work with the kids this week.  Next week we will run through some sample tests, to help kids feel C C & C – Calm, Comfortable & Confident.  I feel that helping them to understand the expectations and what the tests look like will enable them to be more successful and to ‘show what they know’.  This being their first experience with this sort of testing, I want to encourage this philosophy of C C & C, to build their successes for many years to come.

Thank you to the many of you who have offered to bring in a ‘brain power’ snack.  I’ll be sending home a schedule next week.

This week
We spent a great deal of time creating our Reader’s Theater on Christopher Columbus.  Every child had a role.  We were able to share our play with the other third grade classrooms.  It was a wonderful learning experience, and the kids just loved pulling the whole act together.  They did the job 5Xs better than I had expected.  I am so proud of them all.

In Collaboratives (Social Studies) we have shifted into a study of American Colonization.  We are creating relief maps, playing colonial games, studying the difference between the North and South, dancing the Minuet, cooking hasty pudding, and more.

Multiplication
We have begun studying the concept of multiplication.  We have spent some time working with ‘numbers in groups’.  We are using manipulatives and games to increase our understanding of he concept.  The children are doing a great job and seem to be enjoying themselves as well.  Understanding the concept of multiplication is a very important foundation, but I also believe that knowing your facts is just as important.  Having their fast facts down will help in furthering mathematical understandings and investigations in the future.  We will be having weekly quizzes to help us establish these fast facts of 0X0 through 10X10.

Book Reports
Next week your child will be introduced to the BOOK REPORT BONANZA.  The due dates are below, but I will also be sending home a packet that details all the information needed to be successful.

Finally, I just wanted to report that the kids have really had a great ‘buckle down’ attitude this week.  I am hoping we can continue to dig in and utilize this time of year for deeper learning.  Once the weather changes, it is a bit harder to keep their attention.  On that note, stay safe in this upcoming storm.

Sincerely,
Joanna Amaral

Friday Feb. 6th

Hello Room 11:

I am writing today from home.  My daughter woke with fever and sore throat. ARG!  Will this winter ever end?  I’m just glad there will be a warm up for the weekend.

Today is the Opera Performance.  Thank you to all the moms who jumped in last minute to come and help out.  I’m sure everything went well and we will have a very fun DVD to pass around and share.

This week was a bit goofy with the Wed. off, as will next week, with the Friday off, then the following Monday off.  We will probably all settle in just in time for the ISAT’s.  More information on the ISAT’s will come home.  I like to have some “Fun” snacks provided for the testing days – be looking for a sign up to come home next week.

We have shifted our SS studies from the Native Americans into a mini unit on Explorers.  We are bridging into our study of the colonial period so we can then shift right into pioneers.  The pioneer dates are April 21, 22, & 23.  Your child will only go for ONE of those three days, so if you have a conflict, I need to know before Spring Break.

It’s been good to meet with many of you.  Conferences take a lot of energy, but they also rejuvenate my teaching.  Having time to specifically articulate about one child at a time helps me to hone in and focus on the individual.  I look forward to meeting with those I have not yet been with.

Have a great weekend.  Hopefully it won’t be too sloshy!

Best,
Joanna

Greetings on this big blue sky day!

We had a great time celebrating today.  We had our “Compliment Party”.  The class, as a whole, earned 10 compliment points.  These points are awarded by people outside of our classroom.  When we work together as a whole and are complimented for it, we earn a point.  After 10 points are earned, we get to celebrate and reward ourselves for a job well done.  Hopefully we will be able to reward ourselves another time this year, as we have already collect 3 new points.

We had a wonderful trip to the Opera house on Monday.  The kids are really getting geared up for the opera performance we plan to do here in school next Friday with lip synching.  If your child wishes to practice some lip synching at home, feel free to tune into FM 98.7 on Saturday after 12:30pm.

This week we have really focused on following directions.  It seems that this class has become too comfortable with some routines and have allowed themselves to become a bit lazy.  We took time to examine the problems we are having with directions.  Some of these include talking when the teacher is talking, ignoring or daydreaming during times that directions are being administered and not reading all directions thoroughly.  Hopefully taking time to highlight this will help us to heighten our awareness.

This week for Jr. Great Books  we are reading “The Two Wise Children”.  We will be meeting on Tuesday.

Please remember no school on Wednesday, as we have conferences.  I’ll see manyh of you then.

Thanks,
Joanna Amaral
