COURSE DESCRIPTION: This year in English you will increase many valuable skills. They include but are not limited to: spelling/vocabulary, writing, listening, communication, research, speaking and advertising, but most importantly you will have a lot of FUN along the way!
MAJOR AREAS OF STUDY: Spelling, Writing and Grammar
GRADING SCALE: 90% - 100% = A
80% - 89% = B
70% - 79% = C
60% - 69% = D
59% or less = F
PROCEDURES:
1. When you come to class have a pencil, your expanda-file, notebook paper, and any English assignment from the previous day. We will always grade assignments the next day in class.
2. When you come in, immediately get started on the bellwork for the day. You will find the assignment on the board under “BELLWORK”.
3. After bellwork, we will grade the previous day’s assignment. You will always grade your own paper. Once graded you will pass your papers up, I will record the scores, and then pass them back to you before you leave.
4. During instruction please stay seated. It is rude to talk, get up, or move around the room when I or anyone else is speaking.
5. After instruction please begin working on the day’s assignment. If you have any questions raise your hand. Please sharpen your pencil before class begins.
6. If you need to use the restroom please wait until after I’ve given out the day’s assignment. If you have an emergency pass I will sign your agenda, you will sign out on the hall pass log and take the appropriate hall pass to the restroom.
7. You will be dismissed when everyone is quiet and has cleared the floor around them of trash and their belongings. The bell does not dismiss you. There will be no lining up before the bell rings.

TENTATIVE COURSE OUTLINE
FIRST NINE WEEKS:
WRITING
· Introduction to poetry, narrative, expository, descriptive and persuasive essays, business and friendly letters
· Write a personal narrative
GRAMMAR
· Introduce/Review Eight Parts of Speech – nouns, verbs, pronouns, adverbs, adjectives, conjunctions, prepositions, and interjections
· Sentences – 4 types, capitalization, punctuation, subjects and predicates, compound subjects, fragments and run-ons
· Nouns – identify/use proper, common, possessive, singular, plural and appositives
· Combining Sentences – introduce/develop mechanics including punctuation and capitalization with an emphasis on commas, apostrophes, quotations and semicolons
SECOND NINE WEEKS:
WRITING
· Introduction to research
· Write descriptive essay
GRAMMAR
· Pronouns – use subject and object pronouns, antecedents, possessive pronouns and indefinites
· Adjectives – comparative/superlative, demonstratives, articles, adjective phrases
· Continuous use/review of first nine weeks material
THIRD NINE WEEKS:
WRITING
· Write research report
GRAMMAR
· Verbs – principal parts, subject/verb agreement,
linking verbs, helping verbs
· Complements – direct/indirect objects, predicate
nouns/adjectives
· Continuous use/review of all previously learned
material
FOURTH NINE WEEKS:
WRITING
· Figurative language and varying writing
· Write expository essay
GRAMMAR
· Adverbs – comparative/superlative, double negatives,
adverb phrases
· Correct dangling and misplaced modifiers
· Conjunctions and Interjections
· Continuous use/review of all previously learned material
* Throughout the year we will concentrate on spelling confusing words, homophones, and commonly misspelled words. We will also integrate the use of technology as often as possible.
