Welcome Parents:
District track meet changes:

FIELD EVENTS WILL START AT 5:00 PM

1600 METER WILL START AT 6:15 PM

Parents,
Track season is approaching fast.  Here is how track works at Downing:
•    All the girls will try out for the field events/running events at the beginning.
•    Top 7 girls will be picked for each field event.  Only those girls will practice at 7:45am starting Monday, March 2nd.  Each week those 7 girls will compete and the top 3 will compete at the meet.
•    During class the girls will be separated based on their running times into three groups, sprint group/distance group/plyo group (off-season).
•    Each week in class the sprint group and the distance groups will compete to fill the 3 spots in the different running events.
•    Pole Vault is offered at Marcus and is taught by the high school pole vaulting coach.  They are not put into a meet unless they are cleared by the high school coach to compete.
•    The girls can be entered into a meet in no more than:
- 5 field events
- 2 running events and 3 field events
- 3 running events and 2 field events

•    All the girls are expected to ride the bus to the meet but can ride home with their parents after checking out with the coaches.

Please email me if you have any questions! The track schedule can be found on the Downing home page under athletics.

Thanks!

Procedures for games (any sport)  If you are picked to represent Downing Middle School for any sport there are several guidelines that have to be followed in order to maintain supervision and safety.  Every athlete must have a travel card on file to ride the school bus to a competition.  While in the stands at competition, each athlete needs to sit in the designated team area.  There should be no running around during the competition.  Breaks will be taken between quarters/matches.  Every athlete should be sitting and watching the competition, or doing homework.  After the athlete has competed they have two choices.  One choice is to sign out with a parent and go home.  The other choice is to stay and watch the other games and ride the bus home.  If option two is chosen, the athlete is expected to stay in the designated team area, even after they have competed.  All athletes should stay in their game uniform after they compete so that they will be easily visible to the coaching staff.  If they change back into their street clothes, they will blend in with other students and will be harder to supervise.  Athletes may only ride home with their parent.  There is no exception to this rule.

Parents:  If you need to meet with any of the coaches, please feel free to call or email to set up an appointment.  We wont be able to meet with you directly after a game because we are busy supervising close to 40 athletes, but we can set up a time and meet with you during our conference periods.

Thanks for the support of all of our parents.  We couldnt have a successful program without you.  Please remember that if you are wanting to help support your team that there are many ways you can do that.  Picking up team dinners, keeping stats at games, taping the game with a video camera for the girls to watch the at the next practice.  Unfortunately we do not allow parents to help out in practice or help coach at any time.  We consider this a conflict of interest and we want to keep everybody on the same playing field and not let one athlete have an advantage over another. We know you are qualified, but this is something we have done since Downing opened in 2002 and it works best for us.  If you want to help out in some way please contact your sports head coach!!

Tennis- This sport is sponsored by coaches at Marcus HS.  If you have any questions about Tennis please contact Coach Kelly Langdon at Marcus High School.

Swimming- This sport is sponsored by coaches at Marcus HS.  The swimming coach is Coach Shannon Gillespie at Marcus High School.
