What I Love About Our School

I recently found this quote that I thought described the difference between the education at the Flint Academy compared to many other schools. The teachers at our school have a great ability to, as our website states, "maintain the child's natural love for learning." This is one of the many things that sets the Flint Academy apart.

“It is a rarity when schooling offers students the opportunity to develop that capacity for expression that enhances democratic life and citizenship. School for most students is primarily about the process of domestication and conformity, as they learn the grammar and syntax of test-taking skills and become adept at the search for a single correct answer on the test sheet. Creative thought, critical questioning, the articulation of ideas and insights about students’ lives and concerns have little place in the classrooms of most young people.” Policy in many schools “squeezes out any possibility of educating young people so that they develop genuine curiosity about their world [and] a passion to pursue and understand life’s purpose.”

- From "Education and Hope in Troubled Times" edited by H. Svi Shapiro

Ms. Caldwell Begins Doctoral Program

This semester, I began working toward a Ph.D. in Special Education (with a focus on Autism) at the University of North Texas. I will be attending this program part-time while teaching at The Flint Academy. I am excited about the benefits that this increased knowledge will bring to our students and faculty.

11-Year-Old Girl with Autism is Budding Violin Virtuoso

11-year-old Lindsey is one of the students in a music program partnership between The Boston Conservatory and the Autism Higher Education Foundation. The program pairs children with Autism from ages nine to seventeen with Boston Conservatory music education graduate students for lessons. Since beginning to play the violin two years ago, Lindsey has progressed to a level where she is able to hear a song on the radio, then play it on the violin. Lindsey’s school music teachers says that teaching Lindsey is “one of the greatest joys I've ever had working with students. If she doesn't have perfect pitch, it's very, very close. She's a quick learner and she's the sweetest kid.”
