Last week I had the opportunity to attend the American Association of School Libraries (AASL) convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. While there I had the opportuntiy to meet Andy Runton (above), the author of the OWLY books, a series of graphic novels for elementary students.

NAME THAT BOOK NEWS
Excitement is building and interest is growing in the year's Name That Book Contests. Sign-up sheets for both K -- 2 and the 3 - 5, contests are now in the library. K – 2 students will read thirty books; 3 - 5 students will read thirty-five books. All students should read as many books as possible before January. The qualifying tests will be sometime in January, prior to the contests in February (K-2) and April (3-5). The final teams of six each and one alternate per team will be determined by the results of the test. After that, students will meet once or twice a week to practice for contest.
Cathie Partridge has agreed to sponsor the K - 2 Team. However it would be great if other parents would volunteer to give her a hand. Liz Brigman and Penny Linsenmayer have agreed to co-sponsor the 3 – 5 teams. I am sure they would appreciate additional assistance as well. The NTB reading lists are in the library and available online at http://www.hisdlibraryservices.org/Namethatbookmenu.htm.
The City of HousTON created a disaster preparedness DVD that is avaialable for the asking. Go to www.readyhoustontx.gov to your free copy! There are also copies available in the school library.
