Best of luck on Science TAKS tomorrow.  In math we will be doing a "kentucky derby ratio project".  If your children are able, the post draw is today at 4 (ESPN2, I think), and the race is saturday at 5 on NBC.  Students will make predictions and have 30 imaginary dollars to spend on bets.  They will have to calculate ratios of odds to how much they are betting, etc.

ATTENTION MATH MASTERS PARENTS

Sorry I am slow on the draw here.

Wednesday the 7th, the math club goes to NASA from 9-2 (ish).  Parents are welcome (any volunteers?).

Wednesday the 14th, we go to Clifton MS for the big area-wide contest from 8:30-1:30. Parents are also welcome, but be prepared to judge

Permission slips and written notes forthcoming.

Congratulations to 5th grade for reaching the ultimate mountaintop. 100% passed on the first try!  A first for my career at Kolter. Also, and maybe better, 68% of the 5th grade recieved "commended" scores.  This means 40 out of 44 correct or better. Commended means a scale score of 2400 or better, and 5th grade's average scale score was above that.

Thank you for your committment, your support, and your cooperation.

I don't know when the envelopes come home, but I hope it's soon.  I'm tired of waiting.

4/7/08

GOOD LUCK ON MATH TAKS TOMORROW! I have a very good feeling, but I won't jinx myself.

There will be an assignment on circles due wednesday, not a long one.

Also, I will be out of town this week, at the Math Teacher's Conference in Salt Lake.   I will be buying souvenirs to award to students who get a good report (no report is good report) from my sub.

Parents thanks for your commitment.

3/4/08

Homework tonight is due THURSDAY, so no worries.  It is Lesson 20-3 from the new text #6-16. (see link above).  I sent home a low-tech version too, but I hope you try it out. I sent home a quiz and test that were graded.  I also put off the quiz until after TAKS.  Good Luck!

3/3/08

The kids did a great job for the Wax Museum project today.

There is no homework tonight except for making sure we know how to find a mean(the traditional "average"), the median (middle number when all are in order), and the mode(most frequent number).  Quiz tomorrow on that.  The kids will have in their tuesday folder 2 grades from me: the time/temp quiz, and test.  If your child was out with the flu, maybe not.

This week, we will work on Data and graphs, with a bit of time in the computer lab.

Probability is next.

2/11/08

Homework is a 2 page review sheet for tomorrow.  It is to be done in the math folder as if it were a textbook page.

The quiz results on elapsed time was pretty spotty.  It was challenging.    We went over each question one by one, but I think I am going to activate the "DROP LOWEST GRADE" switch  in my gradebook.  It was a valuable quiz, but I don't want it to kill anyone's chances to do well.  So if it comes home Tuesday and it's not pretty, don't panic.   There will be a quiz tomorrow on time and temperature, and the test will be Wednesday. I am confident we'll be ready.

2/7/08

Homework tonight  p. 379 # 4-14  There will be a quiz tomorrow on elapsed time, where you must solve for the start time, finish time and elapsed time.  The work we do today, tonight and tomorrow should be more than enough study to do well.

We still have 4 free tickets for the field trip valentine's day to the Museum of Health, if anyone's available!

2/5/08

Remember tomorrow there is early dismissal.
Homework, if there's any left is brief.  I've been light on the homework to allow for other projects.  We seem to be coming around on the Measurement concepts with some big improvement and better understanding.

A few rough grades will be coming home today in our midterm progress reports (yes, it's today). In measurement, this always happens.  No need to panic if there's improvement as the term goes on.  Sometimes we learn best by stumbling, and getting back on our feet.

1/31/08

For our field trip on the 14th , we have 4 comp tickets for adult chapperones.  Any takers?

Homework tonight is a practice test on measurement reasonableness.  Multiple choice test tomorrow on the same.    On Tuesday, there will be a test on conversions, and then it's on to time and temperature.  1/17/08

Homework is p. 260 all.  A reminder to my math club members to let me know by tomorrow if you are ok to come to the math contest.

10/25/07

Well, I'm doing this from home, as I look after an ill 10-month old.  101.2 fever for JJ.  As he naps, I've been looking ahead, and found a FANTASTIC site online.  It will be at the bottom of my "links" list.
I may be out tomorrow, but I hope to be there.  We will wrap up our side project on integrity, culminated by an "act of integrity" cartoon.

While I'm thinking about it, you might want to check my links anyhow for drill and practice sites.  It's time to make sure we're good on our multiplication facts.

10/24/07

No homework tonight.  We are working on prime/composite, and finding prime factors using factor trees.

Our common assessment is tomorrow.

Happy October.  Where I come from, there is color in the trees, and a crisp wind blows.  So far here, no crispness yet.

Homework tonight, page 279, #7-20.  My third class,  Mrs. Keiter's homeroom, took a bit longer, and I didn't explain everything about how to get around using the LCM, (least common multiple) Just try your best, and I'll clean it up tomorrow.  .

9/27/07

We are doing fraction strips in class.  Homework, if any, will be to finish those up, and bring them tomorrow.  I suggest a paper clip or rubber band will make it easier.  Quiz monday on Naming fractions and mixed numbers.

9/24/07

Took the test today on decimals, and most did excellent.  Lots of 100's and 96's and few if any failures.    I introduced a decimal cartoon assignment worth 50 points.  That's due Wednesday.  Fractions are on the the menu for this week, and awhile after that.

9/20/07

Don't forget that this building will spew out your kidlets at noon.

Homework was a short-answer practice test that most got to work on in class.  They will take the actual test on monday.

9/19/07

Went to the computer lab today, and many felt better about this whole decimal thing.

Tonight's homework is the chapter review/test on page 64.

9/18/07

Homework tonight is page 57 (I think--I'm doing this from home) the even ones only.

9/17/07

Homework tonight:

p. 61, 3-13.  Word problems using decimals

Quiz thursday on adding and subtracting decimals, and estimating products.

9/11/07

Hard to believe it was 6 years ago... one the best things about teaching 5th grade, is that each year, my students remember less and less about that day.  It's like watching our society heal with each new group of kids.

Anyhow, we took a quiz today, and most did well. I decided not to penalize anyone for Question #4 about writing a mixed decimal as a mixed fraction, so no worries there.

Homework tonight, Read p. 42, and do #3-18 on p. 43.  If your child has any confusion on it, we'll clean it up tomorrow.

There will be a quiz on rounding decimals on friday, so if you want to look ahead, it's inthe next chapter.

____________________________________________________

9/10/07

We are looking at decimal place value, the we will move on to addition, subtraction, and rounding of decimals. Also. equivalent decimals will be thrown into the mix.  For those who already have this mastered, I have a challenge math unit on decimals, with more complex situations.  I will also teach multiplication of decimals, later in the year.  It is not required in 5th grade, but the Stanford tests it.  Consequently, any test or quiz questions on that will be counted as bonus.

There will be a quiz tomorrow ( 5 qustions) on place value of decimals only.  Be ready to name these decimals in all 3 forms, word, standard, and expanded.

I will not schedule homework wednesday night, in light of the Jewish Holiday.  To all those who are observing  I wish you a good New Year.  The rest of you have to wait till december. Sorry.

Homework tonight, is p. 41 # 12 - 20 to be done in the math folder.

9/6/07

We took the whole number place value test today.  Most did well.

Just so you know, my quizzes are 50 points, and my tests are 100 points.    I also will drop the lowest grade at the end of the 9 weeks.

Homework tonight is to read all of page 36, , and be prepared to talk about it.  I am assigning #1-3 on that page for homework as well.
______________________________________________________

9/4/07

I hope you all had a pleasant break.  Today, we have a
quiz on place value.  Homework tonight is the Review/Test for chapter 1 on p. 16.  Skip #3-6, since we don't have to learn it.  ( I talk about it anyway, a little in class.)

Also, I have given the kids an opportunity to start their assignment after the quiz, so your child speaks the truth about doing it in school.

Unit test on Thursday.

We had a grade level meeting today, to discuss and coordinate homework loads, and you can expect an average of about an hour most nights, and not many assignments over the weekend.  You can expect about 15 minutes with me, 15 minutes with Mrs. Shong, and about 30 from Mrs. Keiter, who teaches 3 subjects.  I know there is some anxiety out there about homework loads. I would recommend waiting until we get back into the swing of things, and we all get to know each other before getting too worried.  It's been an extra long summer and we probably all need to knock off some of the rust.  We hope to see you Thursday for Open House.

One more thing: if something major is going on at home that might hinder homework time, please let us know. Email or a note is fine.   We're reasonable people here!

Greetings, and welcome to another year. If you are new to this, here are a few suggestions.  Click NOTIFY ME, and enter your email address.  Then, every time I make an update, you get an email telling you there's something new on this page.  I also encourage you to try my flashcards.  It has all of the "icky" facts your child may be still working on.

Please check out the links above.  The most recent is a powers of 10 website that's very cool.  There are drill and practice sites, as well as 3 different released versions of the grade 5 TAKS, that you can try, and check.

Homework tonight is page 7 of the text #15-33 ODD ONLY.  This is to be done in the orange math folder.

I'll call our first quiz for Tuesday.
______________________________________________________

8/30/07

I was just checking if you were paying attention!  Our first quiz is TUESDAY. I wrote Monday, thinking we had awhile before Labor Day.

We are working on naming big numbers, and place value.  Expanded, word, and standard form.

Homework is p. 10  # 14-28
