JOURNALISM I - add a journal entry, WORK ON FIVE SURVEY SHEETS OUTSIDE OF CLASS DUE NEXT TUESDAY,
IN CLASS TODAY, USING THE SAME TOPIC AS YOUR SURVEY,RESEARCH THE INTERNET TO FIND 10 LITTLE KNOWN/SURPRISING FACTS ABOUT YOUR TOPIC
When you find a fact you want to use, highlight and copy the complete statement, then paste it into a Word document.
Before leaving the website, highlight and copy the website address and paste the website under the factual statement in your Word document.
You need 10 little known/surprising facts from at least three different websites to make a 100 on this assignment.

JOURNALISM I - add a journal entry, TURN IN LETTER TO THE EDITOR, TURN IN SURVEY.
TODAY IN CLASS you will choose a topic of interest to you and other students that you will use to complete a series of assignments in the next few weeks.
In your folder is a document called STORY IDEAS. Choose one of the topics on the list or suggest your own topic and get my approval.
Once you have chosen a topic, you need to create a survey about the topic you chose.
You need a multiple choise question with five possible responses, and an open-ended question that students can answer in a complete sentence.
You have a survey form in your folder that can be used to input your questions and choices. Print a copy and let me approve it, then print 6 copies to get responses from 120 students.
You have until next Tuesday to get the surveys completed.
After you have finished printing your surveys, you may do research about your topic on the Internet. You will use the same topic for all upcoming assignments to finish out the semester.

JOURNALISM I - add a journal entry, read a story in the current issue of The Bronco Beat newspaper, then write a ltter to the editor.
Limit your letter to two or three paragraphs. Stick to the following format: In your first paragraph, introduce your problem and sum up your objection. In the second paragraph, include a few sentences to support your view.End with a great summary and a clever, punchy line. Proof read your letter. Editors will ignore letters that contain bad grammar and poorly-written rants. Print your letter, sign it and turn it in for a grade.

Following the SPECS worksheet, write your own editorial about the Fort Hood shooting - DUE TUESDAY.

PHOTO JOURNALISM  - start a new journal WEEK 12, work on FLORAL patterns today and tomorrow maybe the sun will be shining for you to be able to work on the new photo shoot assignment USING REFLECTED LIGHT IN PORTRAITS. For this assignment, you will take a series of 10 portraits in the same locations and light settings as the last assignment, but you will use a white reflector board to bounce the light of the sun back onto the subject's face. You will need a person other than yourself and the subject who can hold the reflector board where you want it to capture the best lighting for the portrait. The reflector board should not be seen in the portrait. You will have the rest of the week to work on this assignment. Your Power point should have 11 slides. On each slide after the title slide you will have a before picture(one you took for natural lighting assignment) and an after picture(one you take using the reflector board). You will need to write on each slide where you placed the reflector board in relationship to the sun to get the best lighting on the subject's face.

JOURNALISM I - add a journal entry. NEW ASSIGNMENT - research and document websites, interview five people, and write a FEATURE story about HALLOWEEN. The purpose of a FEATURE story is to inform and entertain the audience(DHS students). Your story angle should be unique and express your creativite thinking and writing, however it must be written in journalistic format(lead or introduction, followed by at least five sets of transitional paragraphs and direct quote. If you cannot think of an angle to write your story go with the angle of explaining Halloween to someone who has never heard of or celebrated the day. Rough draft, interview notes, internet research documentation is all due Friday at the end of the period.

PHOTO JOURNALISM - add a journal and continue with the NATURAL LIGHTING photo assignment. Make a folder called NATURAL LIGHTING to copy your pictures, continue taking pictures. Once you take 10 pictures in 10 different lighting situations, you need to set up a Power point named NATURAL LIGHTING with 11 slides. The first slide is your title slide. On each slide after the title slide, put one of your pictures and a brief explanation of the lighting where you took the picture.

PHOTO JOURNALISM - add a journal entry, continue with squares patterns. Today you will start a new photo assignment to find out more about NATURAL LIGHT. You will take a series of 10 close-up portraits (head and shoulders only) in different light situations around the school. You will need to pair up to do this assignment and each person will take pictures of the other person. You are required, but not limited to taking portraits in the following light situations(SAMPLES ARE IN YOUR FOLDER IN THE NATURAL LIGHT SAMPLES FOLDER):
1. BACKLIGHTING where subject's back is to a window and photographer is facing the window
2. SIDE LIGHTING where the photographer and subject face one another with their opposite sides against a window.
3. REMBRANDT OR 3/4 LIGHTING where subject's body faces the window but their face is turned to face the photohgrapher whose side is against the window.
4. INDIRECT LIGHTING where the subject and photographer are outside but in a shaded, covered area.
5. INSIDE LIGHTING UNDER HIGH CEILING WITH LIGHTING FROM WINDOWS but not right next to a window.

PHOTO JOURNALISM - start a new JOURNAL WEEK 9, make sure you have 10 animal patterns and 10 bubble patterns in your patterns folder, plus 45 completed vocabulary slides. Start creating your own SQUARES PATTERNS - you need 10 by the end of the week. This will all be graded this week.

TOMORROW, (10/20) we will start a new photography assignment called NATURAL LIGHT PORTRAITS so bring your cameras with fresh batteries.

PHOTO JOURNALISM - add a new journal entry, open Adobe Photoshop CS3 software then open the ANIMAL.JPG. I will walk you through Photoshop basics then you will be on your own to create 10 original patterns from the original ANIMAL.JPG PATTERN. Each time you create a new pattern, you will give it a unique name that implies the filter or brush used to create the pattern and save it in your MY PATTERNS FOLDER.

JOURNALISM I - -Create a new Journal Week 6, add a journal, save in your documents folder.
-Create a set of 24 questions to interview a student of your choice at DHS who participates in a school sport or a sport outside of school, or a sports-related hobby.  You should have four questions from each of the six categories. Type the questions, leaving enough room for the interviewee to write a response, and putting a signature line at the bottom of the interview notes. You should know something about the sport.
-Interview needs to be completed by Wednesday, Sept. 30  and you should be writing the rough draft on Thursday in class. The story should include factual information about the sport and the person as well as five direct quotes from the person. Final draft is due Friday, October 2.
-Survey #4 due Wednesday, Sept. 30.

PHOTO JOURNALISM - Start a new journal for week six, add a journal entry and save in your documents folder. Finish up the Top 10 Tips Power point.

JOURNALISM I - add a journal entry to journal week 5, survey #4 due Wednesday, finish yesterday's assignment. You are ready to start writing your first story. After reading the articles at the following website(http://www.ehow.com/how_4884597_write-personality-feature-story.html), and reviewing the handout about story formatting, you should begin writing your own personality story using the interview notes and personal knowledge of the person you interviewed. You final story should be 250-500 words in length and include the five direct quotes that you highlighted on your interview notes for yesterday's assignment.

JOURNALISM I - add a journal entry to journal week 5, survey #4 due Wednesday, finish typing questions and answers from interview questions. When you are finished typing questions and answers, HIGHLIGHT the five of the anwers that you think best tell the story of that person. RANK each remaining answer according to importance, with #1 being the most important.

PHOTO JOURNALISM - add a journal entry to journal week 5, go back to the Kodak website and write down each of the ten tips, making note of the types of pictures taken in each tip. Then, you will create your own Power point presentation of the Top 10 Tips, rephrasing Kodak's tips in your own words and using your own examples. Your Power point should have 11 slides. First slide is your title and name. Each slides after should have a tip, an explanation in your own words, a example of what not to do, and an example that is corrected according to the tip. COMPLETED POWER POINT IS DUE FRIDAY. Save your pictures and Power point in you documents folder on the computer. Remember we don't have the photo journalism hard drive right now, but it should be back up and running next week.

JOURNALISM I - survey #4 due Wednesday, START A NEW JOURNAL WEEK 5,add a journal entry and save as journal week 5 in your folder on the photojournalism on home media drive. Remember, this is where I go if I need to check your work. Finish interviewing, get a signature from the person you interviewed, be interviewed by a classmate, type your interview notes in question/answer format, print, staple to the front of your interview notes and turn in for a test grade. Tomorrow we start a new interview.

PHOTO JOURNALISM - START A NEW JOURNAL WEEK #5, add a date, picture and a journael entry, save as journal week #5 in a new folder in my documents. Go to kodak.com, click on tips tab, select learn, then photo tips, then top ten tips. Read the article and google key words for more information about particular tips you don't complete understand. You will take pictures tomorrow. Complete the Abstract Alphabet assignment and the update to the photography vocabulary Power point. YOU WILL NEED YOUR CAMERAS THIS WEEK.

After you have finished writing questions and reading the handout I gave you yesterday, you may begin interviewing your partner. Each person should complete the interview and get a signature to be finished with this part of the assignment.

JOURNAlISM I - add a journal entry, Survey #3 DUE TODAY, we will discuss interviewing and write interview questions today in class, tomorrow you will interview a partner in the class and get their signature, and Friday you will type the interview notes, staple them to the top of the interview notes and turn the entire packet in. Next week you will begin interviewing students outside of this class for the next phase of journalism which is writing stories for publication.

PHOTO JOURNALISM - add a journal entry, continue taking pictures for the ABSTRACT ALPHABET assignment. Remember that you have to copy the pictures to the ABSTRACT ALPHABET folder, then insert them from your folder into the Power point presentation.

JOURNALISM I - START JOURNAL WEEK 4, survey #3 due Wednesday, Read the article about the Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District court case to learn more about your rights a student then answer the questions at the bottom of the article. Answer the questions in a Word document, print and turn in when you are finished.
PHOTO JOURNALISM - START JOURNAL WEEK 4, start new project called ABSTRACT ALPHABET - today and tomorrow you will have time to go out of this class to take pictures of the letters of the alphabet formed by architecture and patterns inside and outside the building. You cannot go into classrooms or go past the sidewalks surrounding the school. An example of this assignment is something round, like the clock can represent an O. You need one picture for each letter of the alphabet and each picture must be in focus, zoomed in on the part of the architecture that creates the letter and be well-lit.
You will also create a Power point presentation with 27 slides. The first slide is a title slide and the remaining 26 are for each letter of the alphabet. Label each slide and insert the corresponding picture that you take. YOU CAN DO THIS ASSIGNMENT AT HOME AND BRING THE PICTURES TO SCHOOL.

STARTING MONDAY, YOU WILL NEED A DIGITAL CAMERA WITH CHARGED BATTERIES AND A CARD OR CABLE TO GET PICTURES FROM THE CAMERA TO YOUR FOLDER ON THE COMPUTER. I HAVE A FEW CAMERAS THAT CAN BE CHECKED OUT DURING THE CLASS PERIOD, BUT NOT ENOUGH FOR EVERYONE. If you have to use school equipment, your parents will need to sign a permission form that they are responsible for damaged or lost cameras. The blank permission forms are on the counter by the door. Please take one home today and bring it back signed by your parent before asking to use the school cameras.

Start a new journal titled JOURNAL WEEK TWO and add today’s entry. This week’s journal topic is FREE WRITING(whatever you feel like writing about). Remember you need to add 50 words(about 4 complete lines of text in the default font and size).

Choose a partner for the next class project, choose a topic and sign up with Mrs. Colston.  Topics are first come, first serve and only one group can have a particular topic. Once you have a topic and a partner, read the assignment sheet for what is expected and begin your research.  PRESENTATIONS BEGIN FRIDAY, SEPT. 4.

Journalism I - turn in first period papers,500 sheet copy paper or $5, signed parent letter, add to journal week 1 topic is "getting back into the mindset of school",survey #1 DUE TUESDAY, SEPT. 1, PRINT JOURNAL AND TURN IT IN TODAY, Get into the same groups as the newspaper scavenger hunt and study the Houston Chronicle online newspaper website, then each person in the group select a question to answer about the likenesses and differences between the print and online versions of the newspaper.
