Mid-term grades are now posted on PowerGrade. This quarter is flying by!
DARE graduation is Monday, December 17th from 10 - 11 at the South Campus auditorium. The newsletter has it incorrectly entered as the 18th.
Your child has now completed the semi-final copy of their personal narrative. They are available in the classroom for teachers and peers to read and offer suggestions for revision and editing. Their work will also come home next Friday, December 6th for your suggestions. They will then make final corrections, add some artwork, and then I will bind them into a book. We will be writing one more story before Young Authors using a similar format, then they will be asked to submit one piece of writing for consideration for submission into the district contest.
We are 'collecting' comprehension strategies in our reading selections. Some introduced so far are: mind mapping (main idea and supporting details), identifying question types, using context clues, identifying correct use of multiple meaning words, analyzing character and setting, and identifying author's purpose and point of view.
Your child practices reading fluency weekly through timed one-minute readings. They are not graded but are in a personal fluency packet so that each student can see their progress. We read aloud often at school, but extra practice at home is valuable!
Word Journeys spelling is phonetically based and developmentally appropriate for each child. A fresh set of words is introduced every other week through Word Walk with me, and then they sort and manipulate the words through various activities throughout the next two weeks.
We are working on identifying compound subjects, predicates, and sentences within text then using them appropriately in our writing. Next up will be comparing and contrasting sentence fragments and complete sentences.
Research shows that the best way for a child to improve their reading is to READ! While certainly this comes as no surprise, our day is so filled with all of the above that we were not taking much time to just read for the sake of reading. So.... I am working with each 6th grader to make sure they have a book/author they truly enjoy and then setting aside at least 15 minutes daily for them to read in LA class. This is in addition to their Guided Reading/Reading Counts time and may involve a different book. You can contribute to their reading success in several ways. First, set aside at least 30 minutes daily if possible for them to read anything of their choosing. Secondly, ask them questions about what they are reading. Encourage them to read aloud as often as possible, even if it is to their favorite pet!
Thank you for your continued support! Jill Mills
Congratulations to Alex Germann and Matthew Watkins who were the top spellers in our spelling bee at Pronghorn today and who will represent us at the district bee on February 9th!
