Hello, I am so excited for the next eighteen weeks teaching you to enjoy, appreciate, and create ART. We will have fun creating art by correlating it with stimulating academic core curriculum, standards and assessments. We will look at and talk about major works/styles of art, as well as create our own masterpieces using the elements and principles of design. We will study various artists, art styles and cultures from around the world. Student art is displayed around the community and online too at www.artsonia.com.

All art assignments are based on a point system with each having objectives to be met and a point value. Each student is graded on: following directions, responsibility, skills, knowledge, effort and their own unique ability. The only way to fail my class is by not turning in their assignments. Please expect a progress reports every two-three weeks. Each report is required to be signed by a parent or guardian and returned for 10 points. The grading scale is the same as all other junior high classes.
The good news is students can gain extra credit by going above and beyond the call of duty--a great way to encourage self-direction and good work ethic. Hard work brings success.
They can complete independent art work created by them taking at least 20 minutes or more; must be neat, original, complete, skilled, and mounted. They can find newspaper, magazine, brochure or internet “art”icles about art for five points each. I encourage participation in school activities (Blue and Gold days, hat day, food drives, etc.) not only is it fun, but it encourages unity and keeps them involved and out of trouble! J The last is bringing “junk”, I need it bad, so please raid your cupboards, your friend’s cupboards, your neighbor’s cupboards, and your grandma’s cupboards for household items. Students earn five points for each grocery bag full of clean junk. (i.e., meat trays, magazines, fabric, yarn, ice cream buckets, butter tubs, egg cartons, etc.) If you have something else you think we might be able to use -- give me a call, email me or send me a note). I’ll come and get it if necessary.
Unfortunately, it isn’t all roses and chocolate. Students can lose points too. I know, bummer! But I encourage responsibility! They can lose five points each if they turn in work without their name, turn it in late—five points per week, come to class late (tardy), borrow a pencil, unexcused absences and/or bad behavior.

Every student has the right to work in a positive learning environment. If a student chooses to break a rule, the following consequences will occur:
Discipline | Ball---written warning and gives them chance to change, if they continue…. - 1st strike----Isolated seating for one week.
- 2nd strike---Isolated seating time is determined by the teacher. We will contact you.
- 3rd strike---You are out!!!!!-----Office referral------and we call you.

I need volunteers occasionally to help around the art room. If you would like to help, please indicate the time and days (am/pm) you are available. Also, do you know anyone, any place, studio, or business with an art connection that would share their expertise? Please share their name, phone number, and email address?
Parents:
Together, we can make this a terrific experience!

I understand this can be a hardship for some of you so if you can’t get them let me know soon so it won’t hurt your child’s grade.
Be sure to write your name on everything and enclose the supplies in a box, can, or pouch for safe keeping. Students may want to bring a paint shirt; it is the student's responsibility to put on a paint shirt when art materials are being used.
