Philanthropy: A Seattle Times reporter and photographer came out to interview our class for about 45 minutes today. They are writing a story about their Seattle Times Fund for the Needy and were impressed that our class raised $100 to donate to their cause. Our class got to interview them when they were finished, asking about careers in journalism. It was a nice experience for the students and reinforced the positive aspects of giving. The reporters were interested in finding out more about what seems to be a culture of giving at Marvista with the Penny Drive, Haiti Relief fund, the current used coat drive, and other charitable events that have gone on this year in our community. The article is scheduled to appear in the Feb. 7, Sunday addition. Give you child a pat on the back!
Notice: I will be attending a Technology seminar tomorrow as part of the Peer Coaching Grant I was awarded this year. My mother, Mrs. Matthews, will be the guest teacher. I expect a good report when I return :).

Parent notice: A Seattle Aquarium letter was sent home to parents and guardians today. Because our class in part of the Ocean Science grant, parents can take a class from the Aquarium, chaperone our Aquarium field trip and beach trip, and receive a free family pass for a year. It is a great deal. The first class is offered this Sunday and you get free child care and admission that day. I hope we can get some families involved. The next classes are offered in March as well.

Sale Results: What a succes! All the students need to get a big pat on the back for running such a smooth operation. We virtually sold every donation. Just a single box of items was left over. Our grand total was $1,178.00. If we divide that money for every student in the fourth grade and add the $500 the PTSA donated towards our Pioneer Farm field trip, that reduces the cost per child by roughly $20 each. That is great! Thank you for all your generous donations.

Homework:
It looks like I am able to access this schoolnotes.com account now. I am sorry I was not able to update the account at all last week.
That communication lapse may have led to an increase in late work. Please check your child's student planner and homework folder with them so you know what work they need to complete each day. Today I had many students in at all three recesses completing late work and I will not provide that time in the future.
Reading: Read and Respond. November Reading Goal: complete a biography and complete the book report assignment. Presentations will be on November 19 and 20th.
Math: Timed test corrections. Extra credit- play closest to 100 game at home tonight with a parent or friend to earn an extra "4" on an assignment. The number cards needed for the game can be cut out of your workbook.
Spelling: Missed words from your pretest written 5 times each. Test Friday.
Writing/Science: The first 5 paragraphs of your comparing the salmon lifecycle to the human lifecycle need to be complete by tomorrow. (Salmon: eggs, alevin, par, smolt, adult, spawner. Humans: developing baby, baby, toddler/child, teen, adult, senior citizen.)
Reminder: Field trip to the cove for our salmon trip Friday morning at 9:05. We will return to Marvista for lunch. Parent drivers. Tomorrow all driver clearance forms need to be turned in. The district has just let us know that groups larger than 20 will no longer be allowed to have parent drivers. This will effectively end parent driver field trips for us and will mean the cancelation of field trips due to the cost of charter bus transportation. I have not received official word of why the decision was made and am very sorry to have to report it.
Assembly: Our class did a nice job performing for the Veteran's Day assembly. Ask your child about it.
