What students should bring to school:
Students are encouraged to utilize a backpack to carry belongings from home and school. Basic materials include a three ring binder with paper, pens, pencils, and erasers. Please let Success staff know if assistance is needed in obtaining basic materials. Students may choose to bring additional school supplies or they may need additional materials for some mainstream classes. These needs will be discussed with parents on an individual basis.
Don’t bring any of the following to school:
Toys, games, or weapons (or anything that can be construed as a weapon),
Food, candy, soda or other drinks unless pre-arranged with parents and staff.
CD players and electronic games are usually allowed by bus drivers but must be left in backpacks during the school day.
Program structure:
Morning bus ride: Students are expected to comply with bus rules and will earn points for a successful morning bus ride. The bus will be greeted by Success, Inc. staff at the designated drop off location. Students will be escorted to the classroom.
Breakfast: Students may choose to have breakfast which will be served either in the commons area or in the classroom.
Dismissal: Students will be dismissed when their bus arrives. Prior to walking out to the bus with a staff member, students will complete their daily tracker, bankcard and home note.
Mainstream schedule
Harbor Ridge operates on an eight period rotating schedule. Students are scheduled into eight classes but only attend four per day on an even-odd basis. Students attend even periods on “blue days” and “green days” are odd period classes. Students will be mainstreamed into general education classes on an individually determined basis. One of the objectives of Success, Inc is that students will attended a maximum number of general education classes on an independent basis. However, this is an individually determined process and students generally perform best if mainstreaming is accomplished incrementally. Some students may need a longer timeframe to become successful in general education classes and/or may need some accommodations or modifications to be successful. Mainstreaming will be addressed through the multidisciplinary team.
Behavior management system
Students receive high rates of positive reinforcement for appropriate behavior during all aspects of the day through a combination of praise statements, in addition to free time, snacks, and daily points. Students will have the opportunity to buy from the Success Inc. store on a daily basis if they choose. They may also bank points in order to trade points for bigger items. Students may also contract with staff for larger items which they would be motivated to work toward. Some of the behaviors which students will earn reinforcement for are being prepared, working hard, and following classroom rules.
Each student has a designated Target Goal, which is incorporated into their daily schedule and tracking sheet.
A daily tracking sheet will accompany students to all activities and locations throughout the day. The type of tracking sheet will depend on each student’s earned level. High levels will track behaviors for larger periods of time. In class activities will track behaviors on a five minute interval basis. The tracking sheet will also summarize all costs incurred by the student, point losses as well as points which are banked. Tracking sheets will monitor if the student is:
in their appropriate location,
compliant to staff direction,
using appropriate language,
being respectful to others. The
target goal is the fifth area that
is monitored.
Level system
All students will participate on the classroom level system which is comprised of five levels. Students must meet indicated criteria before moving to the next level. Each successive level has increased privileges but the criteria become higher.
Students will immediately drop at least one level f or any behaviors from the “no tolerance” list or any other severe behavior.
