What can my child do to improve his/her grade in Reading?
1. Extension Projects: Students may choose to complete extension opportunities. Points awarded will be applied to areas of greatest need. Two or three chances each quarter.
2. Workshop Points: Students must follow workshop rules during the workshop portion of the class each day. Each student begins each quarter with 100 points. Points are deducted daily if rules are not being followed. Ask your son/daughter to share the expectations for this portion of our class. (10%)
3. Risk Taking: Students must share journal responses when called upon to do so. We try to hear from each child as often as possible each quarter. They should select their best responses to share when they get the opportunity because they are being evaluated for quality of responses. (10%)
4. Listening/Note Taking/ Analyzing: Students must listen to other students while journal responses are being shared. They must also take notes and then comment to the class when called to do so. Notes are collected on a random basis. It is important to listen and take notes every time someone shares. (10%)
5. Tests and assignments: Students must keep accurate notes in their journals on key concepts so they have them available to study for upcoming tests. Students were allowed to use their spiral notebooks for most tests and quizzes during the first part of the school year. They will not be allowed to use them later on. The text for the class is The Language of Literature. We also use teacher read alouds and student self-selected novels as text for our program. (40%)
6. Read At Home: Students must read AR books at home for 20 to 30 minutes each day. While signatures are not required, AR tests must be completed. Accelerated Reading will not count for more than 10% of students quarter grade.
A.R. is a building wide expectation. Students are also expected to read at least 10 different genre during the course of the school year. (10%)
7. Journals: Students must make at least 25 active reading responses in their journals during workshop time. The length of responses should average 50 words. All responses should go well beyond just discussing the plot. Ask to see your child’s three ring binder. There should be sample responses located there. (20%)
