Hello!

Please make sure to return retake orders to school tomorrow. It is important to make sure they are returned promptly. Late orders receive a penalty. We will be writing a dictee tomorrow. Please continue to take a few minutes to review with your child. I have also sent home the letter regarding the “Come Read With Me” program. I hope to see some families from our room at this fun interactive workshop. I am working on an agribition package for parents who are interested in making this package a big success.

Hello!

Our last journal entry will become our next blog entry that we will be publishing on our blogs.  Students had previously written 10 sentences about what life will be like when they are 20. To finish our ELA class today, students wrote an additional 5 sentences about what learning will be like when they are 20.

I wrote these four questions on the board to help guide them with their journal entry.

    * What does learning look like when you are 20?
    * Where do you learn when you are 20?
    * What do you learn about when you are 20?
    * Who do you learn with when you are 20?

It is important that students have completed their journal entries as we have limited access to the laptops.

Please take time to read the post regarding Agribition on our classroom blog. It can be found at http://skroom10.edublogs.org

Hello!

I am following a new program in my classroom. It is adapted directly from Dr Lee Jenkins L to J program. What we are trying to eliminate is the "Permission to Forget". As he outlines, we often expect students to retain information during a short-term period. This is problematic because students often encounter problems when we make long-term retention assessments.

Last week I sent home a vocabulary list for our new FLA unit on the Arctic and Nunavut. This list is comprehensive and contains all the words that students are expected to master during the entire unit. I am using this website to randomize all they spelling words of our vocabulary list for all our dictées during this unit. Students will never know exactly which words they are expected to prepare for any given dictée, as they will be randomized. They should concentrate their efforts on mastering all words over a long-term period. After this unit students will receive another comprehensive list for the following FLA unit that will contain 15% of the previous list. This will continue all year-long. I do realize that this program has high expectations for our students. We are strategically targeting long-term retention for our students to ensure continued success in their writing. This program also has a student support to encourage them along their way to mastery success. Students individually and as a class will plot the data results from their dictées. I personally like this element of the program that allows students to practice data plotting and charting information.

I am also creating an account on this website (http://www.quitlet.com) for our families. There is a search function on the page. If you enter ''skroom10'' into the search field and hit enter, you will find our account. This page will allow students to practice the English equivalences for our spelling words and their definitions in English. Unfortunately, this site does not allow students to practice the actual spelling of the words. Try it out with your child and please offer feedback. It seems to me that this is a great resource to help us with our new program.

Should you have any additional questions regarding this program, please send me an email.

Just a few reminders.

Please send fabric to school with students tomorrow for our Learning Through The Arts session. 5 students indicated that they had scrap fabric at home that they could bring for the class. I am unsure how much fabric we actually need. This was a request from our LTTA facilitator.

I would like to encourage everybody to keep rolling those reading logs! The month's end is quickly approaching and a few final entries are still possible.

Scholastic orders are due Wednesday, Oct 24th, 2007.

Picture retakes are Friday, Oct 26th, 2007.

Tomorrow is day 3. On day 3 we exchange our books at the library. Please ensure that your child has their library books at school tomorrow so that they can either renew or exchange them.

In class students have individually read for 15 minutes. This time could be applied to their reading logs to convince kids that they are daily competent readers!

Students are to finish their outstanding Math assignments. Most students should only be completing a few outstanding exercises on select pages.

I would like to take this opportunity to apologize. We have been unable to write our second dictée as of yet. One of our parents has emailed me requesting clarification. As per previous practice, Fridays were to be the dictée evaluations days. Mondays I would post the new dictée sentences. As we are trying to wrap up a few assignments in-class and due to a schedule reshuffle Friday, we have still yet to write our second dictée. I had intended for this to happen today but was forced to change plans. We will be writing the dictée tomorrow afternoon. I understand your question regarding dictées. I will try to ensure that dictée occur regularly Fridays and that I post new content Mondays.

Thank you for your understanding. I look forward to seeing you tomorrow night at our Open House.
